Health Insurance

HEALTH INSURANCE IS MANDATORY FOR ALL STUDENTS

If you are a full-time matriculating student who is not a U.S. Citizen, you are required to be enrolled in the Dickinson College Student Health Insurance and will be automatically enrolled. All other full-time matriculating students attending Dickinson College must yearly enroll in or waive out of the insurance coverage offered by the College. Students who wish to waive out of the coverage must be U.S. Citizens and provide proof of private coverage. Students who do not provide proof of private health care insurance will be automatically enrolled in and charged for the school's student health insurance plan through United Healthcare.  The Student Accounts Office coordinates the waiver procedure and will send information to you in the summer. Please visit their departmental webpage for more information.

WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW

  • You should bring a copy of your insurance card along when you arrive on campus.  We strongly suggest that you also upload a copy of your insurance card via the Patient Portal so that the Wellness Center has it on file.
  • You should confirm with your insurance plan that you will be covered when away from home or out of the service area.  If not, then your insurance company is not eligible for waiver and
you will be required to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan.  Please note:  Many insurance plans offer guest memberships when you are away from home.
  • You should contact your insurance company to find out if you need pre-authorization for specialist, x-rays, or laboratory visits.  If so, you should also find out how your insurance company handles pre-authorization.
  • All part-time and full-time matriculated students are eligible for services at the Wellness Center, regardless of your health insurance plan.

    Before you waive:

There have been some incidences with high-deductible plans, out-of-state Medicaid plans, and HMOs that have hindered students trying to access healthcare from local community resources.  We strongly recommend that you check with your insurance provider to assure continued health insurance coverage while at Dickinson, specifically for diagnostic testing (lab work and x-rays) and referrals to specialists.

CHARGES YOU MAY INCUR

The Wellness Center does not participate with insurance plans, but will provide a walk-out statement for Health Service charges that can be submitted to your insurance plan for reimbursement.  Please refer to our fee schedule.

In some situations, our health care providers may order diagnostic testing off-site.  This may include laboratory tests, x-rays or other diagnostic tests.  We will send lab orders to Health Network, Quest, or LabCorp for tests not performed in our lab.  You should verify with your insurance company if you are required to utilize a specific lab.  X-ray and other diagnostic tests will be done either at an out-patient facility or at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center.  The individual office will bill your insurance company for these tests.

After your insurance company processes the claim, you may be responsible for deductible, co-pays, or co-insurance and will be billed by the individual office.  You should receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your insurance company describing the visit charges, insurance payment and applicable patient responsibility amounts.
