Green Move Out

Reducing Waste through Reuse

Dickinson values sustainability and encourages students to consider the following options during Dickinson's Green Move Out to maximize reuse, build community, and eliminate waste destined for landfills and incinerators, sites that create toxic pollution which negatively impacts local communities. The Center for Sustainability Education, Residence Life and Housing and partners from across the campus and community have come together to provide endless options for the reuse of your unwated items. Please explore this list of recommendations and share information with others. Plan ahead to find the best next home for your unwanted items.

DONATE: Don't Dump

  • Sell, Giveaway or Trade Items Yourself: Use DsonMarket, Dickinson’s online marketplace (www.dickinson.edu/dsonmarket), to make money, keep your items in the Dickinson community and help others. This is a safe, inclusive place to sell hard to move items such as appliances, rugs, lamps, electronics, bikes, etc. that other students may want!

  • Store Your Items: Non-seniors should consider storage options vetted by Dickinson Residence Life and Housing. Find friends to share space with in a local storage center so that you don't need to give away and rebuy items later!

  • Donate to U-Turn: Donate non-perishable foods, housewares and clothing in boxes located in your residential space’s common areas from May 2-16, 2025. These items will be collected, stored and sold at the U-Turn Yard Sale on June 14, 2025. This project is coordinated by the United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County and has provided $15,000-$24,000 in revenue annually for area non-profits for over 20 years! *Non-perishable food items are donated to Project SHARE, not resold.

    • Apply to be a U-Turn Volunteer and help collect unwanted items across campus. Stay until graduation with housing and meals covered!

    • Ask RA’s, HAM’s, Eco-Reps or residence life staff about the best options for your donations. Each building has different options.

    • Bring your items to the open hours at the U-Turn Trailers in the Allison Hall parking lot on May 12-16 from 1:00-4:00 pm.

    • Contact the Dickinson Green Move Out Team for unwanted large item pick-ups using the form below. We will schedule a time to come get your donations!

  • Donate to Free xChange: The Dickinson Free xChange aims to 1) reduce waste and promote reuse, 2) provide a safe, equitable and accessible space for the exchange of clothing, accessories, textbooks, resuable bags household items and non-perishable food to every Dickinsonian 3) create awareness of the social, economic, and environmental impacts of consumerism and 4) provide a space for sharing and building community.

    • If donating to Free xChange during move out, please put away (fold/hang/sort) your own donations. There is a donation bin there 24/7, but it fills quickly and we have limited volunteers at the end of the year. Please NO DUMPING items at Free xChange for others to clean up.
