2021 Baird Sustainability Fellows

Jack Henry Buck, Biology Major

Baird Sustainability FellowBAIRD E-PORTFOLIO

Jack Henry Buck is a Biology major, with a focus on ecology. He is from Minnesota, and enjoys the great outdoors. His passions include fly fishing, hiking, canoeing, reading, and writing - especially about ecology, environmental issues, and history.

At Dickinson, he chose not to pursue a minor to engage his wide interests. He tutors at the Writing Center, where he has helped many students strengthen their skills to become more confident and analytical writers. He is also a brother of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. In 2019, he worked with the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Foundation in Montana, restoring mountainous trails and building awareness of the value of wild places. In Spring 2020, he studied in Patagonia, where he was lucky to experience volcanos, glaciers, and rainforests firsthand. Alongside his advisor, he is currently part of a research project in Colorado examining the movement patterns and thermal ecology of female prairie rattlesnakes. His project focuses on differences in behaviors and thermal characteristics of pregnant and nonpregnant rattlesnakes.

Jack is excited to meet, converse, and work with students from numerous majors in the Baird Colloquium, and through it hopes to apply the skills he has developed at Dickinson to his postgraduate career.
