Baird Sustainability Fellow

BAIRD E-PORTFOLIO

Nick Long is a Biology Major from Acton, Massachusetts. His concentration in biology incorporates ecology, marine and freshwater systems, and environmental science. At Dickinson, he also enjoys studying environmental history and philosophy. He works at the Alliance for Aquatic Resource
Monitoring (ALLARM), providing outreach and assistance to volunteers, conducting research on topics relating to citizen science, and occasionally lending a helping hand in the lab. His time with ALLARM has shown him how local natural resource management can be guided by communities through community based research, which he hopes to incorporate in his future career. In his free time, Nick enjoys playing on the ultimate frisbee team and DJing at the college radio station.

Outside of Dickinson, Nick conducts research on specialized gill anatomy in marine fishes with a partner from Howard University. His main project focuses on the gill chambers and ventilation patterns found in a family of deep-sea anglerfish called sea toads or coffinfishes. Nick hopes to apply the skills he’s developed from his research, courses, and job experiences to help promote sustainable and resilient coastal communities.
