2019 Baird Sustainability Fellow

Lena Friedman, Environmental Science and Education Majors

Baird Sustainability Fellow

BAIRD E-PORTFOLIO

Lena Friedman is an Environmental Science and Education double major from Nashville, Tennessee. She
was drawn to Dickinson College because of its focus on sustainability and emphasis on hands-on
learning, and specifically because of the College Farm and the opportunity to work and learn there. On
campus, Lena works in the Writing Center as a peer tutor and as a writing associate, conducts
independent research in the biology and environmental science departments, and is actively involved
with Spectrum. She has been employed by the Farm since her sophomore year as a shift worker and as
the lead educator for the Sustainable Earth Education (SEED) program, and the Farm continues to be one
of her favorite locations on campus to work, learn, and teach about sustainable agriculture.

Over the past summers, Lena has worked as an educator at several nature and outdoor centers,
culminating in an internship at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. In addition to running
programming during that internship, she worked with SERC scientists to developed new research-based
curriculum to teach visiting classes about shark research and conservation. She is looking forward to
building on these experiences and expanding her knowledge in the Baird Colloquium this semester.
