Karuna Sah, Earth Sciences Major

Baird Sustainability Fellow

BAIRD E-PORTFOLIO

Karuna Sah is an Earth Sciences major who grew up in Nainital, a small town in the Himalayan foothills of India. Throughout childhood Karuna was involved with environmental issues, initially as a volunteer in tree plantations and solid waste management drives, and later as an intern in sustainable living and rural development. Karuna chose Dickinson for its commitment to sustainability and to pursue a deeper understanding of Earth Sciences through research.

Her passion for science and love for the outdoors took her to the Canadian Arctic at the end of her first year, a study abroad semester at the University of Otago, New Zealand and in 2018 to Iceland for her senior research. Karuna’s thesis looked at how singular events like volcanism and landslides compare to climate change with their impact on glaciers on Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland. She is keen on pursuing research in the field of glaciology.

Karuna has been actively involved with the Outing Club, Climbing Team, has been Resident and Community Advisor for Residence Life and Housing and is a GIS intern on campus. Her goal is to use scientific research to emphasise diverse issues of sustainability at the individual, community and macro levels.
