BAIRD E-PORTFOLIO

Joan Smedinghoff is an environmental studies major from Chicago. Since her freshman year, Joan has worked for the Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM) where she has been very involved in stormwater management and public education and community outreach. Her mission at ALLARM has been to integrate the organization into the Dickinson and Carlisle communities in order to build people's capacity for environmental stewardship. She spent a year in Bremen, Germany, where she studied and experienced firsthand another country's approach to sustainability.  For her senior research, Joan is looking at how small towns address their transportation needs by looking at the borough's implementation of the Carlisle Circulator bus.

Her time at Dickinson has taught her that sustainability is a multi-faceted issue encompassing much more than consumption, and that it can and should be addressed at every level from personal responsibility to international negotiations. Joan is excited to work with the other talented and passionate Baird fellows this semester and looks forward to what they will accomplish together.
