Admissions Counselor Biographies

Rebecca Chernyha

Greetings from our nation’s capital! I have been living in Washington, D.C., since 2015, but I’m originally from Arizona. I received my undergraduate degree from a liberal-arts college in New York (this definitely prepared me for D.C. winters) and shortly afterward began my career in admissions at a large public university. I worked there for a number of years and then decided to get “back to my roots,” so to speak, at a school based in the liberal-arts model.

I love how threads of Dickinson’s founding principles are woven through the educational experience, even to this day, but the institution is always looking toward the future. The great emphasis placed on interdisciplinary study means our graduates feel comfortable looking at the big picture of the world and understand the complexity and interconnectedness of the issues we face. It’s a privilege to be able to work with students and families during this very exciting time, and I delight in seeing the “lightbulb moment” when students realize that their values and what they are looking for in a college align perfectly with Dickinson.

I love being able to go back to campus, and I also love that I don’t have to drive on I-95 to get there! While on campus and in Carlisle, there are always some must-dos for me:

  • Grab an iced coffee from Denim. For non-coffee moods (or times), I enjoy an iced Himalayan Black Tea from Yak N Yeti.
  • Eat lunch at The Grazery, where I will probably order the chickpea wrap or the tuna sea sandwich.
  • Swing through the farmers market. The Dickinson Farm usually has a tent set up, and they make seasonal pizza! A slice makes a great snack.
  • Take advantage of the great hiking trails in the area. I’m a big fan of the Pole Steeple trail (pictured below), but don’t let my victory pose fool you. The trail is very doable! I recommend taking the longer but less steep way up and then the steep way down.
