Work as a full-time teacher/coach at the McDonogh school for two years, learning from master teachers while developing classroom skills to prep for a long-term career in education.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

  • I have a strong understanding of the skills I need to apply my education to whatever field I find myself pursuing.
  • Dickinson has taught me how to stand up for myself and how to use my skills to work toward a goal.
  •  I am a leader, a powerful writer and communicator. I know how to navigate social circles, and I have opened my eyes to a new tier of opportunity I would not have met without Dickinson.
What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

Working at the institution I will be at. It is a marvelous school, and I will have the space and time to be able to think about how I want to further my career after this teaching position.

  •  My acceptance into the Mansfield Visiting Student Programme.
  •  My first group chat with my friends that have stayed with me since freshman year.
  •  The first day without masks.
Internship Experience

I did a short-term winter externship program at the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Md. I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a classroom environment. During my time there I shadowed teachers at all levels, participated in a faculty meeting, taught two sections of a class and prepared lesson plans for feedback from teachers.

I will be working at the Waidner-Spahr Library during the 2022-23 academic year under Associate Director Information Literacy & Research Services Christine Bombaro and other librarians. How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

The Career Center has been an incredibly helpful resource for me as I have applied for jobs for the first time. Workshops and one-on-one appointments have prepared me to write resumes and cover letters, network and interview. I've also met and built a supportive network of faculty and other students who have provided me with advice and intellectual stimulation, which should serve me well in the future.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I do plan to return to school at some point for a graduate degree, but not until I take some time to determine what my long-term goals are. I'm looking forward to my work at Waidner-Spahr, and I hope that it will provide me with some clarity in terms of whether I want to pursue a library career further.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

There have been many defining moments for me, in multiple aspects of my Dickinson experience. Studying abroad in Oxford has been a phenomenal cap to my undergraduate years, and I've greatly enjoyed pursuing interests sparked at Dickinson at a university where some of the professors are scholars I've cited in past essays and in the country where several of my literary interests originated. I'm grateful for the encouragement and support of Professor of English; John J. Curley '60 and Ann Conser Curley '63 Faculty Chair in Global Education Wendy Moffat, both while I applied and now that I'm here. I'm also fortunate to have been able to go abroad as a senior at all, overcoming the disruption of COVID.

I finished my graduation requirements as a junior, writing my English thesis a year early (with a wonderfully supportive group of peers led by Associate Professor of English Siobhan Phillips) and simultaneously completed my second major in French (with great support from Associte Professor of French Adeline Soldin and Associate Professor of French Lucile Duperron). Junior year bolstered my confidence in my own academic abilities, as well as my gratitude for the amazing people at Dickinson helping me succeed. I also define my time at Dickinson with my participation in the arts. The College Choir (led with zeal by Professor of Music and Charles A. Dana Chair Amy Wlodarski) and the Mermaid Players mean the world to me, and I gleaned a great deal of joy from practicing and performing with both. I can't name every person or event that shaped my time at Dickinson, but I can emphasize to the best of my ability that I had a wonderful experience.
