Cynthia Baur, 2016 Baird Sustainability Fellow

Cindy Baur '16

Cindy Baur is majoring in Anthropology with a focus on nutritional Anthropology.  A class of the same title sparked her interest in sustainable food production, a passion that she has continued to pursue throughout her time at Dickinson.  She has worked at the Dickinson Farm since the spring of her sophomore year, including half a summer as a full-time worker.  During the same summer she travelled to Tanzania with the Dickinson Anthropology Department and researched subsistence farming.  Cindy’s passion for food also took her to Perugia, Italy during her junior year to study at the Umbra Institute as part of their Food Studies Program. This past summer she pushed her understanding of sustainable food production even further through a job at Morris Organic Farm in Irwin, PA.

All of these experiences will eventually shape her senior thesis, which will look at the taste and place of Carlisle as well as the privilege associated with participating in the local food movement.  In her spare time she co-leads Asbell Cooking Club, works on the Dickinson Farm and serves at Back Door Café.  Cindy is excited about sharing ideas about sustainability with other passionate students.
