The Center for Sustainability Education at Dickinson College has announced the 2023 Baird Sustainability candidates. Four juniors and a sophomore representing a broad range of academic interests were selected for advancing sustainability goals on or beyond the Dickinson campus across scholarship, leadership and service:
Students accepted as Baird Fellows enroll in the Baird Honors Practicum, in which they’ll work with peers from diverse academic programs, enhancing their leadership skills for creating a sustainable society. The program provides fellows with the opportunity to develop these skills through a variety of activities, including a capstone project, attending sustainability conferences and working with faculty and staff on sustainability initiatives. After successful completion of the Baird Honors Practicum, they will be recognized as Fellows.
“We are delighted to have another strong cohort of candidates for the Baird Sustainability Fellows program,” says Neil Leary, director of the Center for Sustainability Education. “In the fall, the students will play a critical role in Dickinson’s new climate resilience initiative by researching climate change risks and resilience in our region and developing recommendations for Dickinson, Carlisle and Cumberland County.”
The Baird Fellowship program is named in honor of Spencer Fullerton Baird, a Dickinson alumnus, class of 1840, who became the first curator of the Smithsonian National Museum and is regarded as one of the nation’s leading naturalists of the 19th century.
The Baird Sustainability candidates are selected by a committee of faculty, staff and students based on their academic achievement, leadership potential and commitment to sustainability. The program is funded by the Baird Family Foundation.
