The Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues at Dickinson College will welcome a diverse group of presenters to discuss a broad range of issues throughout February. All these events will be live-streamed on the Clarke Forum YouTube channel.

Combating American Racism in the Era of Trump: Towards a Pedagogy of Justice
Tuesday, Feb. 2, 7 p.m. 
Chad Dion Lassiter, Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission

Lassiter is a national expert in the field of American race relations. He currently is the executive director of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. This conversation will explore ways students, teachers and social-change agents can work towards dismantling American racism.  

Bearing Witness While Black: African Americans, Smartphones and the Fight to Preserve our Democracy — One Video at a Time
Wednesday, Feb. 3, 7 p.m.
Allissa Richardson, University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism

Richardson, an assistant professor of journalism at USC, studies how African Americans use mobile and social media to produce innovative forms of journalism, especially in times of crisis. Richardson will share how Black smartphone witnesses of the last five years launched the largest social justice movement in American history. This event marks the annual Morgan Lecture.

Fatphobia as Misogynoir: Gender, Race and Weight Stigma
Tuesday, Feb. 9, 7 p.m.
Sabrina Strings, University of California (UCI), Irvine

Strings, an associate professor of sociology at UCI, will explore the rise and spread of fatphobia in the Western world and its relationship to race science. She will also consider how this dubious legacy has impacted the science behind the so-called obesity epidemic. This program is part of Love Your Body Week.

Air Pollution in Pennsylvania: Community Panel
Tuesday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m.
Panel Discussion

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports air pollution levels in some parts of Pennsylvania are among the nation's highest. A panel of community activists will join Krishnan Ramamurthy, deputy secretary for the Office of Waste Air, Radiation and Remediation at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The discussion will be moderated by Heather Bedi, assistant professor of environmental studies.

The First Amendment and Epidemics
Thursday, Feb. 25, 7 p.m.
Eugene Volokh, UCLA School of Law

Volokh has taught First Amendment law for 25 years at UCLA. In a discussion-led presentation moderated by Professor of Political Science Harry Pohlman, Volokh will address possible restrictions on First Amendment-protected activities during epidemics. He will discuss how the Free Exercise Clause, the Free Speech Clause, and the Assembly Clause bear on these questions.
