Getting Started & Registering in Performance Studies

Performance Studies/studio lessons at Dickinson are open to all students, regardless of major, and carry academic credit.

In order to begin private lessons at Dickinson, please follow these steps:

  1. Attend Music Information Night, the first Tuesday of each fall semester of classes, 5:30 pm, where you can meet your instructor. Upperclassman may contact the instructor with whom you wish to study. (A directory of all Performance Studies faculty, including contact information, is available on the Music Department Faculty page.)
  2. The instructor will place the appropriate override code on your Banner account.
  3. You will receive a confirmation e-mail when the override is placed on your account. Once you receive this confirmation, you must log in to Banner and register for lessons as you would for any other class.
  4. Once your registration is confirmed, you and the instructor will arrange for a mutually convenient weekly lesson time.

Half-hour and Full-hour Lessons

Please note that all Performance Studies registrations default to half-hour/.5 credit lessons. If you would like to take hour long/full credit lessons, contact your instructor and they will make the appropriate adjustment in consultation with the Registrar during the first week of classes.

Overload

If enrolling in lessons causes you to exceed 4.5 credit hours per semester you will need to fill out an overload form. After you have used the overload form twice, you must petition ASC (All-College Subcommittee on Academic Standards, asc@dickinson.edu) to overload for music lessons until graduation. Cc your studio instructor, the music department chair, music@dickinson.edu, and your advisor when submitting the petition. Use this template and follow the instructions for petitioning on ASC web page.

Studio Lesson Fees

All Performance Studies students are assessed a Performance Studies fee. Current fee information for both half- and full-hour lessons is available from the Office of Financial Operations, under the heading Other Fees.

There are scholarships available for enrolled students pursuing studio lessons to cover the cost of half hour lessons.
