How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson has provided a wonderful education that has allowed me to leave confidently and with a well-rounded knowledge of the business sector. Not only do I feel comfortable following up in my chosen field of communications, but I also feel like I was given the tools to explore other realms if need be. Leaving Dickinson, I know I will excel in PR and use my education to fill in gaps and explore intersections between creative thinking and ethical initiatives.

Furthering my career in the PR realm and learning more about how I can use my personal assets, creative endeavors and interests to benefit clients; and positively contribute to the world around us!

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

My first-year seminar with Assistant Professor of Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies Katie Oliviero gave me confidence as a Hispanic woman delving into new topics and confirming my voice in new spaces. Although I did not major/minor in women's studies, I found this course essential to my foundation and growth at Dickinson College. Many teachers throughout Dickinson provided immense comfort and support throughout my experience, but Professor Oliviero not only provided educational resources but the intellect that inspired me to be the best learner and woman that I could be.

Nadia Shahab Diaz

Majors: international business & management, international studies
Hometown: Princeton, New Jersey
Graduate School: New York University Stern School of Business
Field of study: accounting

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I'm excited to continue my graduate studies in the fall at the NYU Stern School of Business to acquire my master's of science in accounting. I'm looking forward to furthering my technical accounting skills with the program's rigorous curriculum and to pursuing CPA certification afterward, and I can't wait to take advantage of the connections and opportunities available in New York City. This summer, I will be working at Munich Reinsurance America, Inc., as a reinsurance accounting intern. Although I am new to the insurance/reinsurance industry, I am looking forward to the new skills and experiences that I will be learning and cannot wait to better understand the unique field of reinsurance accounting. I'm hoping that my pursuit of accounting will bring me a career where each day is different, with plenty of interpersonal interactions and connections and with many opportunities for travel and international assignments.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

My international business & management curriculum has been integral to the development of my career path, particularly because of my classes with Lecturer in International Business & Management Joy Middaugh and Professor of International Business & Management Steve Erfle. Although I did not expect to be interested in accounting, Professor Middaugh's vibrant personality and clear teaching techniques made me want to take one accounting course after another with her, while the quantitative and empirical analysis concepts that I learned in Excel through Managerial Decision-Making have made me a stronger student and taught me the value of the subject in real-life business decisions. We always talk about how valuable our professors are and the connections that Dickinson allows us to have with them, but it is truly the professor that makes the class, no matter how drab you may expect the subject to be coming in, and you might find yourself unexpectedly liking something you thought would not be that important.

Internship Experience

Dickinson College Admissions Office, admissions events intern. When I was offered the position toward the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, I had the unique experience of beginning it under completely remote circumstances. In order to incorporate the student experience in admissions virtual programming, I was responsible for the development, execution and management of a new student-led series called "Common Room Sundays," which became an opportunity for prospective students to learn about the Dickinson experience from current students in an environment that promoted confidential and honest discussion. I also contributed to the organization of on and off-campus admissions events, including panel building, application review, marketing and communications, program support and assessment.

Job title: financial analyst

Job Responsibilities

It is a financial leadership development program where I will be rotated in a different position each year for three years (my location may change as well!). My first rotation will be under the Department of Financial Accounting Services. I am not entirely sure what my responsibilities will be, but generally it will involve supporting my team and overall company in everyday tasks and activities, focusing on financial reporting, analysis and strategy.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson has helped me become a critical thinker in this world. I feel like I am also more open-minded, something I will carry with me in my future career when I work under new people, with new people and in new positions. I believe the global and interdisciplinary courses really enhanced this quality for me. The business courses' core goals and values have definitely enhanced my communication skills. Clubs, sports and Student Senate have been applicable to this as well.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am anticipating acquiring professional skills, both soft and hard ones, throughout my post-graduate experiences. I hope to continue networking and making my mark in each role I have in this leadership program, and beyond it in my future career. I also hope to reach success while also enjoying the work I do and following my passions.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

My defining moments at Dickinson have been the service trips I participated in. I went to West Virginia and was able to do truly impactful work and meet incredible Dickinson students and leaders. I also led a service trip in Hawaii and was able to truly experience a cultural exchange with another inspiring group of students whom I hadn't known before the trip. Both trips really opened me up and forced me to learn about new cultures. I hope to continue volunteer work in my future. Being junior class president in Student Senate was also a rewarding experience as I got to engage with leaders and students in my class about their wants, in addition to getting to know the administration and the projects they were working on!

Internship Experience

I had a few internships and externships throughout my Dickinson experience. I had two externships with Access Holdings, a private equity firm in Baltimore, Maryland, where I researched an industry that would be optimal investment for the company, and created a slide deck. I sat in on meetings to learn about the process of investing in another company. One was one week, and the other was two weeks. I shadowed a JP Morgan alum for three days in NYC during one of our winter breaks, learning about the different jobs around the company, especially the trade room. Lastly, I interned for Aetna/CVS Health for two summers. One summer was under their Department of Premium Accounting in Hartford, Connecticut, where I tracked customers' payments and identified monthly fluctuations. My next summer was virtual under the Enterprise Economics team, where I supported the team with strategic projects. I worked to identify where the company can increase utilization of their own assets across business segments.

Kristen Acocella

Major: international business & management
Hometown: Redding, Connecticut
Graduate School: Springfield College
Field of study: sport management

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

My next chapter in my educational journey will be commencing my master's in sport management in the highly ranked program at Springfield College. Being a Dickinson international business & management major (minors in economics and Italian) has helped prepare me for the foundation for the business and economic scale of both amateur and professional sports and sport management. Dickinson’s self-empowerment-styled curriculum is a solid base for traditional master's programs. Both in-class and extra-curricular programs at Dickinson are designed with individual contribution to a team environment, which will support a career in sport management. As a member of the Centennial Conference Champion Dickinson Softball Team, along with being a member of the Dickinson Equestrian Team where I won both individual and team awards, again the focus was on individual contributions to a team’s success. Basically, Dickinson provided a global sense in a close-knit environment. The challenging academic curriculum, athletic environment and satisfying clubs/organizations will make the next chapter successful.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am very much looking forward to the start of my graduate program this fall. Aside from the excitement of the next step toward a career in sport management, I am very much looking forward to two full years on campus with no interruption due to anything like we’ve all experienced this past year. Continuous classroom experiences, living in an uninterrupted campus/off-campus environment and being able to play two full years of softball due to the NCAA’s sanctioning for college athletes whose careers were interrupted by the pandemic—a return to normalcy is most anticipated!

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

There have been several key milestones during my Dickinson experience. The first and hopefully lasting was the formation of a friend group that started early in freshman year and has lasted the duration and is expected to survive Dickinson for a lifetime. Academic growth, which has included dean’s lists onto what I hope will be cum laude designation has capped off a challenging and rigorous academic curriculum. I am a member of the 2019 Centennial Conference Champions and Regional NCAA participant in a year I was awarded post season honors. I am also a member of the Dickinson Equestrian Team where we won several horse show championships, and I also had the opportunity to represent the team at regional and national select events. Aside from the many extracurricular events, I am very proud that along with two other Red Devils athletes, founded a female focused weekly podcast, “Ladies in Red” that had a successful first year. Of course, facing the challenge of the Pandemic, which took away over a year’s experience, has defined us as a student body which survived and thrived under extreme conditions.

Is there any other information you would like us to know?

I have enjoyed and appreciated a very full four years at Dickinson, even considering the challenges we all faced due to the Pandemic that has taken much of the college experience from us. I have made wonderful friends, enjoyed the comradery of competitive and successful athletes in two intercollegiate sports and participated in the formation of programs that will survive us upon graduation. I learned much about myself and how to adjust focus to maintain and succeed in multiple academic, athletic and extracurricular environments. I will soon complete my Dickinson experience and am most thankful for the journey both as an individual and a diverse population and comfortable that I am prepared for my next chapter.

Internship Experience

I completed two summer internships during my undergraduate years at Dickinson. The first was an in-office experience with Global Housing Expeditors (aka GHE) based in Wilton, Connecticut, following my sophomore year and the second was a virtual (due to COVID) experience with Northwestern Mutual of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, following my junior year.

  • GHE is a procurement advocate in the temporary furnished housing industry providing transient housing for Fortune 500 corporations in support of their transferred employees and project management consultants as an alternative to traditional hoteling. My responsibilities included supporting a team of Housing Coordinators with leasing execution of short-term apartments, preparing accounts payable and receivables and completing financial spreadsheets which were utilized to measure expense against cost which reconciled weekly cash flow.

  • Northwestern Mutual is a major mutual life insurance company which maintains a financial advisory division. I was part of a team of interns led by full-time business development/lead generating managers, focused on proving a consistent flow of potential client leads for NM multi-line advisory services. I was required to complete the insurance/financial advisory training program which was completed upon passing the Whole Life/Estate Planning licensing course, which allowed me to facilitate lead development. Much of our communication was on daily virtual zoom meetings.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

During my first semester, while working for my First-Year Seminar class, "The Meaning and Purpose of Life," I found a quote by Picasso stating, “The meaning of your life is to find your gift; the purpose of your life is to give it away.” This quote made me think for a while, and a few questions arose in my mind: “What is my gift?” “Have I found my gift yet?” In the quest for answers to my questions, I started recognizing the gifts around me. Somewhere between discovering my gift and sharing it with others, I found my life’s purpose through this class. The most significant gift I discovered through this class was the gift of giving. I discovered this gift by volunteering with the Salvation Army soup kitchenette, hurricane relief, Safe Harbor-Night Without a Home and Habitat for Humanity, South Carolina. All four of these experiences taught me that helping others not only gives you an inner satisfaction but also a purpose in your life. These experiences taught me the importance of service and doing all that you can for those in your community and outside of it. I learned that donating your time to a valuable cause can be extremely rewarding, not only for those directly impacted, but for yourself, for your local community and, in the long run, for us all. I discovered that my gift is the zeal to help others, and my purpose is to keep sharing this gift of giving. I believe it is our duty to recognize these gifts and use them to share our message of hope and love with the world. The world needs our voices, our messages and our experiences, so that they can resonate in the hearts of others and give hope and courage to show that it is possible to overcome anything.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Definitely my study abroad experience!

Internship Experience

The Borgen Project: Lobbied congressional offices and the White House in support of poverty-reduction programs and legislation to help make poverty a focus of U.S. foreign policy. I found this internship through LinkedIn. This internship introduced me to connections in local congressional offices, which has significantly enhanced my networking skills. This experience further taught me some great soft skills, such as how to work in teams, how to find an approach to work that is resourceful and innovative and how to collaborate with diverse groups, both internal and external. Working at this prestigious organization not only prepared me to work for a nonprofit but also enabled me to take the role of an entrepreneur if I plan to change my career path in the future.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson prepared me to solve problems quickly and adjust to any situation I may encounter. My time at Dickinson was spent learning various subjects, which forced me to adapt to every class. Translating to the workplace, I have taken on many different roles already, which would not have been possible if I did not have that ability to adapt quickly.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am very much looking forward to meeting new people. Through my internship experiences, I have come to realize that having a big network can only be beneficial. Talking to new people and building relationships is key to learning new things and putting yourself in the best situation to succeed.

Internship Experience

Going into my junior year, I was a part of Wells Fargo's Wealth and Investment Management Internship Program. During the summer of 2020, I had the opportunity to intern with Boeing in Seattle, Washington, as a facilities and asset management intern. I am looking forward to working across sectors in my transactional work. I am excited to explore the world of finance and perhaps get an M.B.A. at some point. I hope to one day start my own firm, whatever that may be.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Academically, it would have to be studying with friends in academic buildings and staying up late in the quiet section of the library. I really enjoyed my short semester in New York City in early 2020. I loved getting to be in such a stimulating environment and working very hard to network within the finance community there. I had a really cool experience where I walked into Roma Pizza Shop on the Upper East Side and met four Dickinson alumni who recognized me by my Dickinson Soccer quarter zip. It made me feel at home in the city. Athletically, it would have to be competing on the men's soccer team and getting to play in France and Spain with my teammates. I will remember that trip and cherish those bonds for a lifetime.
