Hometown:
Dallastown, Pa.
High school:
Dallastown Area High School.
Major:
Political science.
On my Dickinson experience:
The best part of my Dickinson experience has been getting to see how much of a voice students are given campuswide. Through on-campus jobs and internships, as well as other leadership opportunities, we have an immense say in how we walk our own paths while also being able to shape how the college operates.
Best thing about my major:
From a young age, I have enjoyed learning about politics and the political history of the United States. Dickinson has helped me build on those interests by offering classes that give me a better understanding of familiar topics while introducing me to issues and perspectives I may never have encountered otherwise.
Why I chose Dickinson:
I knew Dickinson was my number one choice after visiting during my junior year of high school. The close-knit feel of the community and the kindness of the people I met stood out to me. I also had the chance to meet the vice president of admissions, who genuinely cared about why I wanted to attend, making Dickinson a top choice for both me and my family.
Favorite class/learning experience:
In my Western European Government and Politics class, we participated in a simulation in which each student represented a Dutch political party after an election. We had to form a government while advocating for our party’s platform and cabinet representation. It was a great way to see firsthand why the Netherlands’ fragmented party system and low electoral threshold can make coalition governments change so quickly.
Favorite professor:
Professor Curtis Edmonds has been one of my favorite professors during my time at Dickinson because of his humor and approachability. He keeps class engaging without making it feel overly serious, and he has always made himself available when students need support.
About my internships:
I interned with the York County District Attorney’s Office and on U.S. Representative Lloyd Smucker’s congressional campaign. These experiences gave me firsthand experience in the legal and political sides of public service and strengthened my interest in working in law and government for the public good.
Post-Dickinson plans:
After Dickinson, I plan to attend law school. I have also considered applying for the college’s admissions associate position, since my work in admissions has been an important and transformative part of my Dickinson experience.
Proudest accomplishment so far:
I am proud to serve as president of my class and help plan events that keep my class engaged on campus throughout the year. This role gives me the opportunity to represent not only my class but also the broader student body before the college’s administration, which is a huge honor.
Most important thing I’ve learned so far:
One of the most important things Dickinson has taught me is that being uncomfortable can be a good thing. Opening yourself up to new subjects, speaking up in leadership settings and taking on new responsibilities can be challenging but rewarding experiences that give you the ability to grow.
Clubs and organizations:
Liberty Cap Society, Mock Trial and Student Senate.
Honors/scholarships/awards:
Dickinson Grant.
