Student Snapshot: Joshua Felker ’28
Joshua Felker ’28 is combining his passion for biology with an interest in law through Dickinson’s 3+3 law program. From researching antibiotic-resistant bacteria and microplastics to participating in clubs and student-faculty research, Joshua is building a foundation for a future in patent law, where he hopes to put his scientific background to work.

Biology.

Pre-Law Society, Liberty Cap Society, Volleyball Club, Tennis Club and DTones A Cappella.
On my Dickinson experience:
The sense of community on campus and in the town of Carlisle is incredible. Every person I’ve talked to at Dickinson over the past two years has been very kind and helpful!
Best thing about my major:
Majoring in biology offers the opportunity to pursue research that can improve future health. Through course material, projects and student-faculty research, biology offers my peers and me the opportunity to discover new things about the world.
On choosing Dickinson:
I chose Dickinson for two reasons. The first was the relatively small student-to-faculty ratio, which allows me to work closely with my professors on academic matters. The second was the opportunity to participate in the Dickinson 3+3 law program, which allows me to complete my bachelor’s degree and attend law school more quickly and efficiently.
Favorite class/learning experience:
My favorite class that I’ve taken was Cell Biology. I learned various microscopy techniques to view structures and processes under the microscope, and the projects and readings demonstrated a complex understanding of the subject. It was very rewarding to engage with and understand the material.
Favorite professor:
Dr. Kushner was incredibly helpful in preparing me for my future classes as a science major. I had Dr. Kushner for my first year seminar, and his course built my skills in writing research papers and understanding journal articles, which have contributed to my success in the courses I have taken since.
About my research:
I participate in student-faculty research studying antibiotic-resistant bacteria and microplastics in the environment. Recently, my research experience enabled me to help German artists with an art exhibit by collecting microplastic samples that were incorporated into the artwork. It was a great way to communicate current scientific issues through art.
Post-Dickinson plans:
After Dickinson, I plan to attend law school to pursue a JD. I intend to pursue patent law after taking the bar exam, allowing me to combine my scientific background with law.
Most important thing I’ve learned so far:
Something very important I’ve learned at Dickinson is to take as many opportunities as possible. Whether it’s through research or a club or activity, the opportunities to meet new people and learn something new are incredible!
Honors/scholarships/awards:
Presidential Scholarship and a Dickinson grant.
