How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson classes have provided me with the resources to further develop my critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills. Not only has my time on campus allowed me to challenge myself intellectually, but it has also given me the opportunity to enhance my communication skills, attention to detail and time-management skills. I am ready to apply the valuable knowledge I have acquired on campus to my full-time position after graduation.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am hopeful that my career will allow me to build upon the foundation of knowledge I have obtained from my college education. During my time at IBM, I am anticipating the opportunity to combine my interests in business and technology as well as discover which specific area I would like to pursue in a master’s degree program in the near future.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

I believe that one of the defining moments of my Dickinson experience was declaring my major in mathematics. Once I declared my major at the end of freshman year, I finally determined my main area of interest, which ultimately guided me in establishing what opportunities I would like to pursue after graduation. Another defining moment in my Dickinson experience was my time studying abroad in the United Kingdom. Spending an academic year in England allowed me to gain independence, participate in an entirely new academic environment and have unforgettable travel experiences.

Internship Experience

I interned at Clarity Software Solutions, Inc. in Madison, CT. In my business analyst intern role, I evaluated quantitative data within the company’s software application, created test files in Excel, developed product image designs and participated in meetings to help establish team project goals.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?
 
In addition to providing me with a strong foundational understanding of math and computer science concepts, Dickinson has taught me to think critically and take a holistic approach to problem solving in any context. I've also gained confidence in my writing, public speaking and teaching abilities thanks to experiences I've had at Dickinson over the past four years.
 
What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?
 
I'm very excited to have the chance to develop software that will directly impact (and hopefully improve) people's lives. I also hope to continue learning and growing as a computer scientist and as a person.
 
What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?
 
Some experiences that stand out are serving as a teaching assistant and help room tutor for intro CS and math courses, doing research with my adviser over the summer, and studying abroad in England. That said, I think what I will remember most from my Dickinson experience is the time spent with friends such as playing soccer on the weekends and late nights in Tome.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

As an international student, there were a lot of things I was told "are not for me." At Dickinson, I was able to break that chain and accomplish certain things or get positions that are typically reserved for domestic students. Being able to do that by myself at Dickinson has prepared me for the future and life after graduation. I am now more confident in my abilities and know that with hard work my dreams will not be restricted by what someone else deems impossible for me.
 
What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am excited to start research at my thesis laboratory and be able to contribute to science and the advancement of the field of neuroscience. I am also really looking forward to becoming at teaching assistant and helping undergraduate students discover the amazing world of neuroscience and the human brain.
 
What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

The most defining moments of my time at Dickinson were all my discussions with the administration for various issues. Through these interactions I've become more resilient and learned to never give up fighting and defending for my rights and my health.

Internship Experience
 
I did two internships at a genetics and movement-disorders laboratory at the Mayo Clinic campus in Jacksonville, Fla. I was responsible for a specific project, and I had to complete all necessary experiments and statistical analysis for that project. I also participate in weekly lab meetings and presentations and presented my research to all faculty and students at the end of the summer.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?
 
With my passion for helping businesses maximize values and drive success through quantitative solutions, I aim to build my career in advisory and analytics. As a future econometrician, I can apply quantitative and statistical methodologies to data to create products that provide customers with informative insights and actionable strategies. The data-driven and client-focused mindset prepares me to work and assist customers successfully in many economics or management based fields by designing impactful and meaningful projects. Since every business is now increasingly relying on quantitative models to manage risk, capital adequacy and regulatory compliance, I am eager to deepen my expertise and further my skills to become a valuable asset to my company and a trusted advisor to customers.
 
What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?
 
Throughout the past four years at Dickinson, I was an active member of the Economics Majors Committee, the Food Advisory Committee and Delta Nu Sorority, contributing to a growing and tight-knit community on campus. In addition, I also worked as a teaching assistant in mathematics for Professor Barry Tesman, a Quantitative Reasoning associate, a Peer Tutor and a Library Service consultant.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?
 
Dickinson has provided me with opportunities to further discover my interests and passions, particularly through the liberal-arts curriculum. My math and computer science courses along with opportunities for math research have allowed me to become a more creative, thorough and logical problem solver. Additionally, I have improved my collaboration and communication skills by working as a peer tutor in the Writing Center and as a writing associate. All of these experiences have prepared me to pursue further education in mathematics, with the goal of completing a Ph.D.
 
What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am looking forward to completing math research, particularly in graph theory, a topic I learned about through my major coursework. I am also excited for the teaching opportunities in my graduate school program.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Lafayette College Math Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Summer 2019 - Easton, Pa.
 
I participated in the Lafayette College REU, an eight-week math research program funded by the National Science Foundation. I worked with two other undergraduate students under the mentorship of Prof. Megan Cream (Lehigh University) on a project titled "Chorded Pancyclic Properties in Claw-Free Graphs." During the program I completed original math research, gave regular presentations, created a poster and drafted a paper with our results. My group mates and I later presented our research at the 2019 Joint Mathematics Meetings conference in Denver, Colo.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?
 
With a heavy focus on liberal arts. I feel confident being able to talk about and discuss a range of ideas and topics with all kinds of people. This is especially useful in IT where clients will ask for deliverables, but many colleagues would struggle to either understand the needs of the client or struggle to explain the complex aspects of IT to the client.
 
What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?
 
I anticipate a career full of continued learning. In technology you simply can't stay still. New processes and tools are constantly being developed and quickly become the standard. To remain current, you always need to keep learning.
 
What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?
 
Working for campus rec taught me a lot about managing a team and working across groups on campus. Furthermore, clubs and organizations like the climbing team and outing club gave me a way to pursue my passions and an incredible group of people to share those experiences with.
