A Globally Engaged Faculty

Faculty Opportunities
Dickinson College is dedicated to fostering globally engaged, socially responsible, and sustainable education abroad experiences. We have developed an international reputation for our commitment to imbuing our students with an immersive global perspective, a holistic sustainability education, a community orientation and civic skillset, and the ability to think across disciplines and dialogue across differences. Through these interdependent dimensions of a Dickinson education, students are better able to connect their values to their career and civic goals. Our alumni are out in the world building more just, equitable, sustainable, and prosperous communities. This commitment is central to our approach to education abroad, where we strive to create transformative learning experiences that challenge students to think critically about global issues, power dynamics, and their roles as ethical global citizens.
Faculty are central to everything with do in the CGSE. Since 2021, more than 40 (~20%) Dickinson campus-based faculty members have taught in or led CGSE off-campus programs. Whether on campus or off, they bring astoundingly high levels of energy, support and creativity to the work.
Dickinson faculty members develop and lead short-term programs, serve as on-campus advisors, advise and mentor our incoming exchange students and invite colleagues from all over the world to our campus. They also integrate new perspectives they’ve gained abroad into their courses. And they lift up, advise and support our international students. Global learning creates amazing opportunities for our students AND supports the growth and development of our faculty.
The following opportunities are available for faculty to further cultivate their global mindset:
Lead a Short-Term Global Program: The Center offers administrative support for faculty interested in leading a short-term global program for students. Faculty can review the application process and find resources on the CGSE Moodle site. As we invite faculty to apply to lead study abroad programs, we encourage proposals that align with Dickinson's core institutional values, particularly in the areas of sustainability, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and Fair Trade Learning. Please contact Jesse Phillips, Associate Director for Education Abroad, for more information. Proposals are due at least a 13 - 20 months in advance as programs require approval by GEAC, and APSC.
Join the Global Study Advisory Committee: The Global Education Advisory Committee (GEAC) was established in 2010 as an official subcommittee of the College-wide Academic Program and Standards Committee. A dynamic group of faculty, with broad expertise and experience (in terms of geographic regions and disciplinary orientation), the GEAC offers counsel and strategic guidance to the Associate Provost and Executive Director of the Center for Global Study and Engagement. The GEAC's charge includes, inter alia, review of new long-term and summer program proposals; review and recommendation of faculty candidates for center directorships abroad; advice and feedback on enhancing the international student experience on campus; review of complex study-abroad applicant files; consultation with study abroad staff regarding non-Dickinson student applications; and consultation on policy considerations related to Global Study at the College. To learn more about the GEAC, please visit the Global Education Advisory Committee page.
Serve as a Global Center Director: Faculty direct Dickinson’s Centers in Italy, England, New Zealand, and Spain. Historically, directorships have been for two-year terms. Faculty appointed to a directorship typically serve as the on-campus coordinator for the center they will lead in the two years preceding their tenure abroad. The College provides significant support to faculty interested in these posts; moving, transportation, and storage costs; and housing at the global center.
Invite Guest Speakers on Global Topics: Each year, the Center supports a number of lectures by visiting scholars on topics of global importance. Frequently, the Center partners with academic departments or individual faculty to support scholarly discussion of global issues.
