Puzzler Answer: “An Evening at the Combinatorial Theater”

The answer to our puzzler is 3840. How do we arrive at such a large number? The easiest way to see this is to first seat the couples from left to right. There are 5 couples, so the number of ways this can be done is 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 120. That is, any of the five couples can be seated first, then there are 4 remaining couples for the second pair of seats and so on until the five couples are seated. Once we have seated the couples, each pair can sit in one of 2 ways. There are five couples, so there are 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 25 = 32 ways this can be done. Thus, the total number of arrangements is 120 x 32 = 3840.
