For the past three years, I have worked on-campus at the Career Center. My supervisor there, Tam Heberlig, has been an incredibly encouraging, supportive mentor. She taught me what it means to be a Dickinsonian who goes the extra mile.

Internship Experience

I interned with the LGBT Center of Central PA, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region, Breakthrough Collaborative of Greater Philadelphia and the Court Appointed Special Advocates of Cumberland County. How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson College has prepared me for life after graduation by having such a supportive Career Center. Without the help of the advisors in the center, I would not have been confident in my post-grad documents. Dickinson has also helped me to be more open and international in my thoughts. Due to our large scope about issues in the world, it has taught me to be more of an intersectional thinker.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am most anticipating making a difference with students similar to myself. I look forward to building relationships and being a role model to my students.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

The most defining moments of my time at Dickinson was being a mentor to freshmen. Being able to share my knowledge and experience to ease the anxieties of first years was amazing.

Olivia Mao

Major: educational studies
Hometown: Darien, Connecticut
Graduate School: Manhattanville College
Field of Study: education

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

First, Dickinson has given me tools on how to act, behave and address people professionally in the work environment. For example, I know how to write straight-to-the-point and professional emails to people such as my professors. Secondly, through organizations like Tritons, I know how to advocate for myself and my school. More specifically, I am able to highlight my strengths and weaknesses to people and most importantly to employers. Lastly, being on the executive board of clubs has taught me organization and responsibility. More specifically, leading a volunteer group takes a lot of work, time and patience. For example, communicating with coordinators about volunteer times and transportation, recruiting volunteers and determining budgets. However, I think all this work is worth it in the end! Your work makes a direct impact, reaps in benefits and you're doing something you are passionate about.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

What I anticipate the most about my time at grad school and teaching (teacher assistant) is learning how to become a confident leader in the world. I hope to be a strong, compassionate and hardworking teacher who can positively impact as many students as possible.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Some defining moments of my time at Dickinson were honestly the late college nights full of laughter and deep talks with my friends. The people at Dickinson including the faculty, workers and students all made an impact in my life one way or another. Whether it was the friendly greetings from Rob the crossing guard or the office hour conversations I had with my professors, I felt that Dickinson was a community. A place that cared for its students holistically; inside and outside of the classroom. This friendly and trusting environment allowed me to open up and find out who I am and want to be.

  • Organized weekly activities that incorporated the summer theme and curriculum.
  • Wrote mid-summer and final course assessments on advisees.

  •   Assisted 11th and 12th-grade students with college applications, FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Students Aid), and GPA.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson has prepared me for life after graduation by providing me with a well-rounded, comprehensive education. I had the opportunity to major/minor in three very different fields, and so I learned how to think in diverse ways. I feel prepared to tackle unknown challenges because I know that I have been given the tools to problem solve, think critically and work to find the best solution. I also learned how to express myself and communicate effectively, whether that be through written or oral communication.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am looking forward to challenging myself with a new career that will allow me to think creatively and critically. I think that my experiences with the diverse set of courses I took at Dickinson will help me analyze situations in unique ways. Enterprise Knowledge is a company with a great atmosphere and culture, and I am really looking forward to getting to know my future co-workers, building strong connections and living in a new city. There are a lot of Dickinson alumni who work at Enterprise Knowledge, so it will be nice to have a piece of Dickinson with me on my new adventure!

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Working at the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues really defined my Dickinson experience. I had the incredible opportunity to meet and work with such impressive guest speakers, develop my own professional skills and build a community of friends and mentors. Studying abroad with the Toulouse program was another amazing experience that brought me outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to practice the French language, both with a host family and at the French school I attended. I also enjoyed volunteering with Admissions as a tour guide and student interviewer, as I got to connect with Dickinson in another way and develop my public speaking skills. Overall, though, a key highlight of my time at Dickinson was getting to know and work with all of my professors and mentors.

Internship Experience

I worked as an intern for Educational Testing Service's Assessment Development Division. More specifically, I was a part of the English Language Learning Summer Institute in Princeton, N.J. I helped to author sections of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), including writing the text as well as related questions.
