Dickinson's Sustainability Achievements Receive Repeat Recognition

by Craig Layne

For four years in a row, Dickinson has earned the top position among baccalaureate institutions in the prestigious Sustainable Campus Index, a publication of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). This is the eighth consecutive year Dickinson has been recognized as a top performer.

“Sustainability is a key facet of education and everyday life at Dickinson,” says Neil Leary, associate provost and director of the Center for Sustainability Education. “Working for a more socially, economically and environmentally sustainable world is part of who we are, and we are honored to once again be recognized by AASHE.”

The Sustainable Campus Index recognizes top-performing sustainable colleges and universities overall and in 13 impact areas, as measured through the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS). Dickinson maintains a STARS Gold Rating. In addition to remaining in the top spot in the coveted Overall Top Performer category, Dickinson earned recognition for its participation in the Transformative Sustainability Project, a virtual exchange engaging students in the U.S. and United Arab Emirates to address local and global sustainability challenges.

“On behalf of all of us at AASHE, I congratulate Dickinson for its recognition as a Top Performer in the 2025 Sustainable Campus Index,” says AASHE’s executive director, Meghan Fay Zahniser. “This achievement underscores not only your institution’s dedication to advancing sustainability but also the resilience of higher education at a time of significant global and societal challenges.”

The college is also ranked No. 5 by the Princeton Review for “Green Matters: Everyone Cares About Conservation” and No. 10 in the Princeton Review’s Top 50 Green Colleges. Other sustainability achievements include being one of the first 10 colleges in the U.S. to reach carbon neutrality, being a certified Bee Campus and receiving a Bicycle Friendly University Gold designation from the League of American Bicyclists.
