Starting college is both exciting and overwhelming. There is a lot to navigate, from new classes and new people to a new sense of independence. Looking back, there are so many things I wish I had known when I first stepped onto campus. Whether you are just beginning your journey or already finding your rhythm, here are 10 pieces of advice that can make your time at Dickinson even better.
Some of the best academic experiences come from stepping outside your comfort zone. A class you take on a whim might introduce you to a new interest or career path. During my first semester, I signed up for a child development course without thinking much about it. That one class ended up sparking my interest in psychology, which became my major and completely shaped my path at Dickinson.
It is tempting to sign up for every club and attend every event, but it is more rewarding to focus on a few activities that you truly enjoy. Give yourself time to settle in and figure out what matters most to you.
Office hours are a great way to ask questions, get advice and build connections. Many professors love chatting beyond class topics and can become valuable mentors. One professor I had over a year ago still stops to catch up whenever we see each other. She always asks about my postgrad plans, which is something we used to talk about when I visited her office for help preparing for exams.
Balancing classes, activities and social life can feel overwhelming at first. Using a planner, setting reminders and staying organized will help you avoid last-minute stress and make time for fun.
Get creative with your meals by mixing ingredients from different stations. Adding fresh veggies, trying new sauces or making your own sandwich can make meals more exciting.
The library is a classic choice, but places like Rector, Denim and the HUB also offer quiet, cozy spaces. Find what works best for you.
The campus looks beautiful when covered in snow, but the wind can make walks between classes feel extra cold. And Dickinson represents 43 states and 44 countries, so not everyone is accustomed to an East Coast winter! A warm coat, sturdy boots, and layers will help you stay comfortable and enjoy the season.
At first, it might just feel like a room, but adding small personal touches like photos, cozy blankets and decorations can make it your own. In Morgan Hall, I used tension rods to hang curtains from the ceiling to the floor to create a divider between my bed and desk area. I have had a pink neon light since my first year, and it always made the space feel a little more like mine. In my Goodyear apartment, I hung flowers from the exposed vents, which gave it a warmer and more personal feel.
Dickinson has so many support resources, from your advisor to the Center for Career Development to the Wellness Center and peer tutors. Asking for help when you need it, whether it’s for academics, mental health, or adjusting to college life, is a sign of strength, not weakness.
From coffee shops and bookstores to farmers’ markets and scenic trails, Carlisle has a lot to offer beyond campus. Exploring the town, supporting local businesses and finding your favorite spots will make your time at Dickinson even more special.
College goes by quickly, so enjoy every moment, big or small. This is just the beginning of an incredible experience!
