The Joy of Collaboration

Student Snapshot: Christian Winter ’24

Student musician Christian Winter ’24 is all about fruitful collaboration. Whether performing with professors or peers or working with visiting musicians and composers, Winter says “there’s nothing quite like coming together with others to make something new that you couldn’t achieve or accomplish on your own.” A case in point: Winter’s experience working as a music director for the college’s 2024 musical, Spring Awakening, encouraged this graduating senior to pursue musical direction as well as teaching.

Hometown:

Southbury, Connecticut.

Change A Life, Change the WorldMajor:

Music, with a minor in medieval & early modern studies.

Clubs and organizations:

The Infernos (a cappella), pit orchestra (spring musical) and the Project MCP ensemble.

Honors/scholarships/awards:

The Trust-T Award and the Bullard Music Scholarship.

Best thing about my major:

The best part of being a music major is the constant collaboration with other musicians. From my peers to professors to visiting musicians and composers, there is nothing quite like coming together with others to make something new that you couldn’t achieve or accomplish on your own.

Favorite professor:

Contributing Faculty in Music Greg Strohman. He has worked with me from the very beginning of my time in the music department here at Dickinson. Somehow, he seems to know something about everything, and he has an uncanny ability to make all that disparate knowledge useful, relevant and funny. He is a kind, patient and knowledgeable instructor, and I feel very lucky to have spent so much time alongside Professor Strohman these past four years.

On studying abroad:

I studied abroad in Norwich, England. The highlight of my time in England was going to see the White Horse of Uffington, an ancient hill carving that has been kept up continuously for more than 3,000 years.

Post-Dickinson plans:

After graduation I plan to work in theatre as music director. After spending some time working, I want to go back to school and get an education certificate, so I can teach music in schools.

Proudest accomplishment so far:

My first job as a music director for a musical, Les Misèrables. Taking on such a monumental task showed me that I am capable of more than I had realized, and that there’s nothing I love more than working on music with others.
