Edgy rock musical tackles tumults of adolescence

Charge up for a high-energy ride this weekend as Dickinson presents Spring Awakening. The Tony Award-winning musical captures the turbulence of adolescence in an emotionally charged—and rockin’—way.
Lauded for its emotional depth and raw energy, Spring Awakening is based on the 1891 German play of the same name, electrified by a thoroughly modern rock score.
It centers on teenagers grappling with the tumults of desire and self-discovery while living in a conservative society. As they learn about themselves, their world and their identities, they must navigate a variety of thorny issues, including peer pressure, sexual discovery, bullying, mental health, misinformation, abuse and parental expectations.
“Every new generation faces seemingly impossible challenges inherited from the past,” says Assistant Professor of Theatre & Dance Keola Simpson, who directs this year’s spring musical. “At its core, Spring Awakening is about the dangers that can arise from not talking about the things that make us uncomfortable.”
Justice Roney ’24 (political science) plays the part of the free-spirited Else. She marks her first Mermaid Players production this spring.
“It’s the best thing about my Dickinson experience so far,” says Roney, who credits the talent and kindness of the cast, crew, costume designers and musicians who bring the production to life. “I am so excited for the Dickinson community to join our experience.”
Spring Awakening runs Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 2, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. Tickets are donation-based—suggested ticket prices are $5, $10 or $20.
