This year the Red Devils Sports Network (RDSN) unveiled a new student-run podcast, Ladies in Red, hosted by three student athletes, Kristen Acocella ’21 (international business & managementsoftball, equestrian team), Sydney Engler ’22 (economicspolitical science, field hockey), and Phoebe Prettyman ’21 (international business & managementItalianfield hockey).

The podcast follows Speak of the Devils, a podcast launched by three male students in the fall semester, and takes the conversation a step further.

“The three hosts talk about everything and anything related to women in sports and discuss the past the present and the future,” says Justin Farrell, assistant athletic director for marketing & administration. “They interview special guests, such as U.S. Olympic softball player Leah O’Brien-Amico or Dickinson Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach Kim Masimore, discuss current events and chat about all ladies that are in sports.”

“We wanted to start this podcast to give a female perspective on the sports world. There are definitely controversial topics surrounding women in sports, so we wanted to create a community through our platform to have open conversations,” says Prettyman.

The podcast does not simply inform listeners about the past, current and future events for women in the sports industry, but it also provides an opportunity for these Dickinson students to develop skills that will help them succeed after graduation.

“I am pursuing a career in sport management and possibly media, so it was a natural to be one of the founding co-hosts of Ladies in Sports,” says Acocella, who will be pursuing her master’s in sports management at Springfield College following her graduation from Dickinson this May. “Being a founding member of our broadcast team was most rewarding, and it provides a venue for me to stay up to date on females in the world of sports and particularly those who wear the Red Devils red and black.”

Engler aims to continue the podcast once Acocella and Prettyman graduate. “Maybe with two new female athletes as co-hosts,” she says.
