Alumni Global Adventures take learning on the go

A global outlook is a hallmark of a true Dickinsonian, and so is insatiable curiosity. So every year, Dickinson offers Alumni Global Adventure trips that keep that spirit burning long after graduation. While they visit unforgettable destinations and connect with fellow Dickinsonians, tourgoers also have a chance to learn something new that will enhance the experience, thanks to faculty subject experts and knowledgeable local guides.

This spring and summer, Dickinson presents two Global Alumni Adventures—one in the U.S., and one in Eastern Europe.

May 13-21: Southwest National Parks

Led by local guides and by a Dickinson subject expert, alumni can drink in stunning natural wonders of Arizona, Utah and Nevada while also gaining a deeper appreciation for American and indigenous histories and cultures.

The faculty guide is Susan Rose ’77, P’13, Dickinson’s Charles A. Dana Professor of Sociology and codirector of the Carlisle Indian School Resource Center, whose recent scholarship focuses on the Carlisle Indian School and indigenous studies. Her fourth book, Carlisle Indian Industrial School: Indigenous Histories, Memories, and Reclamations, was named one of the best books of 2016 by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Trip highlights include:

  • a tour of Heard Museum’s “Away From Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories” exhibition, led by Rose, who contributed Indian School materials, along with College Archivist Jim Gerencser ’93
  • views from the Grand Canyon’s rim, an optional "flightseeing" tour, and a stay at the famed Grand National Park lodges
  • a river-raft ride down Glen Canyon and a trip to a petroglyph site
  • an open-air, four-wheel-drive guided tour of the natural structures and sacred lands of Monument Valley
  • an evening with Navajo storytellers

  • monolithic hoodoos in Bryce Canyon National Park

Dickinson’s alumni trip to the imperial cities of Central Europe includes thought-provoking talks and excursions and concludes with the epic Oberammergau Passion Play.

Tourgoers will benefit from the expertise of expert local guides and of the faculty host, Emeritus Professor of Religion Ted Pulcini, whose teaching focused on the relationships between Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and on biblical texts in their historical, social and comparative contexts. An Eastern Orthodox priest, Pulcini retired from Dickinson in 2019. He also has studied the passion narrative.

Highlights of this Dickinson trip include:

  • the Oberammergau Passion Play, staged only once a decade
  • Prague’s historic Old Jewish Quarter
  • Bratislava, led by a local expert on the city’s history
  • the fairy-tale town of Cesky Krumlov
  • the “golden city” of Prague, including Hradcany Castle
  • the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace, the summer retreat of the Habsburg dynasty for more than 200 years
  • an unforgettable classical music concert featuring many fine melodies from the great composers—Mozart and Strauss
  • and regional-wine sampling in picturesque Grinzing.
