Life Beyond the Limestone: Class of 2011

Back to Class of 2011

John C. Allen IV

Where do you live now? Washington, D.C.

Where did you attend graduate school? Boston University, Ed.M. in teaching and curriculum.

Where do you work, and what do you do? I work at a public charter school called KIPP as a middle school math and science teacher. The model of the school is the first of its kind in its charter network, as it involves co-teaching around supporting students with a range of disabilities and severe behavioral and academic challenges.

What was your favorite space on campus? Probably that stretch from Baird to the HUB-i.e., the Dickinson Walk-since it always allowed me to see and talk with different people.

What's your favorite Dickinson memory? There are too many.

Why do you give back to Dickinson? I seek to help strengthen the opportunity for students to attend the college who may lack the necessary means to do so. I want every student who is seeking a quality education to have the same collegiate experience I had at Dickinson, regardless of their race or socioeconomic status. Every student deserves a place that will help them foster the skills to make a difference in the world.

Kali Avans

Where do you live now? Philadelphia

Where do you work, and what do you do? Belmont Academy Charter School, serving as an assistant pre-k teacher. I am planning on transitioning into a lead teacher position upon completion of my master's degree in early childhood education and Pennsylvania pre-k-4th grade teaching certification this May.

What was your favorite space on campus? Britton Plaza.

What's your favorite Dickinson memory? There are so many, but I would have to say the Lupe Fiasco and Kid Cudi concerts.

Michael Davidson

Where do you live now? Landisville, Pennsylvania

Where do you work, and what do you do? Phoenix Packaging. It is a family-owned company, so I have done everything from accounts payable, human resources, operating machines, management of the production floor and personnel to shipping and receiving.

What was your favorite space on campus? The red Adirondack chairs.

What's your favorite Dickinson memory? Joining Kappa Sigma.

Why do you give back to Dickinson? Dickinson is essentially part of my family. I'm a fourth-generation graduate of Dickinson, and the institution helped me and my family, so I return the favor.

Nikki Garubo

Where do you live now? Atlanta

Where do you work, and what do you do? Hiscox USA, as a professional risk underwriter (commercial insurance).

Where did you attend graduate school? London School of Economics & Political Science.

What was your favorite space on campus? Waidner-Spahr Library.

What's your favorite Dickinson memory? There was a quiet, spectacular spring day during Senior Week when a couple of friends and I had the whole academic quad to ourselves. We just sat in the red chairs and took silly photos with Ben Rush. It's one of my most nostalgic memories of being happy exactly where you are and being proud of what you've become.

Why do you give back to Dickinson? Dickinson is second only to my family in shaping who I am today. Not only did I gain an education and lifelong friends, but I learned how to be a contributing member of the community, a problem solver, a critical thinker and a doer. These qualities drive my success in the "real world." I want other students-present and future-to have these experiences so they can come join us in the ranks of one of the country's best educated and most influential alumni bodies.

Allyson Glazier

Where do you live now? Goffstown, New Hampshire

Where do you work, and what do you do? I am a librarian at the University of New Hampshire.

Where did you attended graduate school? University of Pittsburgh.

What was your favorite space on campus? The library <3.

What's your favorite Dickinson memory? Truly too many to name just one!

Other notables? I married Sam Wheeler '10, who I met my first weekend on campus in Baird-McClintock.

Why do you give back to Dickinson? Without the generosity of Dickinsonians before me, I would never have had the opportunity to get a Dickinson education and in the process meet so many amazing and inspiring people. May our continued contributions grant future Dickinsonians the same experiences!

Caitlin Yaeger McCorkle

Where do you live now: Boston, MA

Graduate school: Getting my MBA at Boston College

Where do you work and what do you do: I work at Boston College for a center that works with k-12 district, charter, and Catholic school principals. I manage the operational side of our program, including recruiting and selecting fellows, planning and managing events, and strategic planning.

Favorite space on campus: Each year has a different space. First-year: Drayer 3rd floor. Sophomore year: Morgan field. Junior year: Waidner-Spahr Library. Senior year: Althouse Trellis.

Favorite Dickinson memory: I loved all the time I spent sitting with my friends, hopping around discussing different topics, helping each other better understand the world and ourselves. I wouldn't be half the critical thinker I am now without those experiences and conversations.

I give back to Dickinson because: I have so many fond memories of the institution and felt so supported by it. The people at Dickinson matter. I know that my gifts go towards bringing even more great people (students, faculty, and staff) to campus and keeping them there. Additionally, I met some lifelong friends at Dickinson, and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that I also met my husband (Henry McCorkle) there as well.

Emma Messinger

Where do you live now? Bozeman, Montana

Where do you work, and what do you do? I work at the Montana State University Alumni Foundation as an event planner.

What was your favorite space on campus? The Rabinowitz Reading Area on the second floor of the library-especially when it is raining!

What's your favorite Dickinson memory? It's too hard to choose one! The many memories that came from studying abroad in Toulouse are definitely among the top.

Why do you give back to Dickinson? Dickinson made a huge impact on my life, and I hope that giving back will allow another small-town mountain girl the same opportunity I was so fortunate to have.

Laura Wilson

Where do you live now? New York City

Where do you work, and what do you do? Town & Country magazine, account manager-jewelry, watch, travel & weddings.

What was your favorite space on campus? Art Studios & Trout Gallery.

What's your favorite Dickinson memory? I love the tradition of signing in and signing out of the college. When you think about who you were when you signed in and who you were when you signed out, there are a lot of remarkable accomplishments in between-friends, travel, personal and academic wins! Those two milestones as a Dickinsonian were two of my favorite moments-realizing where you began, how far you had come and where you were heading next.

Why do you give back to Dickinson? I continue to give back to Dickinson because Dickinson had a major impact on me in so many ways. A lot of my life today is reflective of my Dickinson experience, from my career to my dearest lifelong friends! I want to continue supporting this incredible institution because a place like Dickinson deserves to thrive and grow for future generations. It's imperative that students and families considering Dickinson see and feel the support from alumni so that they really understand the value of the community and the education gained as a Dickinsonian. If you believe in Dickinson, you truly should be giving back!
