Orientation Staff

First-year students at Dickinson are offered support through the many faculty, staff, and upper-level students available to help them transition into the college environment. Orientation Leaders serve as an excellent resource for students as they begin navigating their way through college life. 

Orientation Leaders

The Orientation Leader (OL) position provides an opportunity for returning students to help new students experience a positive transition to college. Each OL will be assigned to one group of new students (approximately 10-20 new students) during orientation. OLs guide their students through the multi-day Orientation program, offer peer insight into academic and social life at college, and help introduce students to activities and events on campus.  


  • Completed at least one semester of college courses before applying for the position.
  • Maintain a 2.75 GPA. 
  • Demonstrate positive and enthusiastic regard for Dickinson and Campus Life - academic and co-curricular expectations and involvement.   
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student studying in Carlisle for the fall semester.
  • Must be a community member in good academic and disciplinary standing. A separate statement may be required if you were ever found responsible for a community standard violation. 
  • Possess strong leadership & interpersonal skills, creativity, a positive attitude, and self-motivation.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse groups of people.
  • Be a strong role model socially and academically.
  • Possess a strong desire to mentor new students and assist them in their transition to college.

Roles and Responsibilities  

The Orientation Leader (OL) is expected to:  
During training:  

  • Arrive on campus by noon on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 - **note: we are not able to accommodate OLs arriving before this date**  
  • Participate and be engaged in OL Training (August 21 through August 27) 

During Orientation:  

  • Serve as a role model and mentor to a group of 10-20 first-year students  
  • Be 100% engaged throughout Orientation (from Wednesday, August 21 to Sunday, September 1, 2024).  
  • Work as a member of the Fall Move-In Crew responsible for assisting students moving into their respective residence halls  
  • Serve as a positive representation of the college and as a resource to new students and their guests  
  • Answer questions about both social and academic aspects of college life  
  • Facilitate social activities for new students through direct involvement and participation  
  • Provide administrative support for the program, including preparation of Orientation materials  
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the goals of orientation  

During the Academic Year (this is encouraged):

  • Be knowledgeable about campus resources and activities and be able to refer students to them  
  • Assist with the recruitment and hiring of the 2025 Orientation team 
  • Keep open communications with the Associate Director for First Year Experience regarding concerns about your students  
  • Promote excitement around and be present at many of the New Student Programs    


  • Housing and meals are covered through OL training and Orientation programming.

Estimated Timeline (This timeline is subject to change based on the needs of the institution) 

  • Orientation Leader Training: August 21-August 27
  • New Student Arrival & Orientation: August 28-September 1 
  • Recruitment & hiring of the 2025 orientation team (TBD)
