Student Snapshot: Abby Kohan ’26

Abby Kohan ’26 is a data analytics major and softball standout who pairs technical rigor with ethical thinking. From studying abroad in Italy to interning at PwC, she’s building skills and experiences that inform a people-centered approach to data-driven problem-solving.

Hometown:

Arlington, Va.

High school:

Wakefield High School.

Major:

Data analytics, with a minor in mathematics.

On choosing Dickinson:

I first found out about Dickinson through the softball recruiting process. After doing some research and visiting campus, I was drawn to the welcoming atmosphere of the campus and the community. I was also excited to learn how strongly Dickinson encourages studying abroad for all students, even athletes, which made me look forward to the opportunities I’d have. I was equally drawn to Dickinson’s liberal-arts education and the meaningful connections and opportunities available to students after graduation.

Best thing about my Dickinson experience so far:

"From my softball teammates who’ve become like family to the close relationships I’ve built with my professors through small class sizes, I’ve always felt supported and connected. That feeling extends across campus, making every day here feel welcoming and meaningful."

Best thing about my major:

What I value most about the data analytics major is how it prepares students for life beyond graduation by balancing technical and interpersonal skills. Along with learning how to analyze and interpret data, we’re encouraged to think critically about ethics, communication and the broader impact of technology.

Favorite class:

The class I gained the most from was Philosophy of Data. It challenged me to think beyond the numbers and consider the broader impact of technology and data use in society. Exploring the ethical and human dimensions behind data helped me see how analytics connects to real-world decision-making.

Favorite professor:

Professor of Mathematics and Data Analytics Dick Forrester, because of his teaching style. He takes the time to help students truly grasp concepts, and he’s always willing to answer questions, whether about class topics or just the major as a whole.

On studying abroad:

I studied abroad in Bologna, Italy, during the 2024 fall semester. I loved immersing myself in Italian culture, learning the language, connecting with people and exploring the city’s everyday life. The location was also so accessible that I was able to travel to six other countries, trying new foods and experiencing different cultures along the way. It was an incredible experience that taught me a lot about independence and how much I enjoy exploring new places.

About my internship:

Over the summer, I interned at PwC as a data and tech intern within the financial risk and regulatory consulting practice. I was part of a project team focused on building automated workflows using Microsoft tools, coding and AI, which strengthened my technical and problem-solving skills. The experience also gave me a clearer understanding of client relationships, and it was really cool to see how large-scale consulting projects operate.

Post-Dickinson plans:

I plan to return to PwC as an associate in the financial risk and regulatory consulting practice.

Clubs and organizations:

Dickinson softball and athletics communications assistant.

Honors/scholarships/awards:

Dean’s List, Centennial Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll, First Team All-Centennial Conference 2023 and Honorable Mention All-Centennial Conference 2024.
