From Juneteenth celebrations to a new podcast, Dickinson summer interns help Hope Station strengthen community ties

Dickinson students Alayna Kelly '27 (Spanish & Portuguese, political science), Ajla Salkic '27 (English) and Owen Barry '26 (history, philosophy) served internships at Hope Station this summer, where they helped the Carlisle nonprofit strengthen community ties.

“I think it's incredibly important to be involved in your community,” says Kelly. “I feel so much more connected to the Carlisle area than I did just being a student.”

Hope Station is a community-centered nonprofit dedicated to amplifying voices and supporting Black and Brown communities in Cumberland County. For students involved, the work is not just about programming but about building meaningful connections as they gain professional experience.

One of the projects they worked on was launching a podcast, Voices of Hope, for Hope Station. Episodes explore career paths, civic engagement and ways everyday people can create change.

“We're really just trying to reach a broader audience,” says Kelly. “It's all about spreading the message of Hope Station and hope itself.”
