Dickinson's annual competition to promote sustainability is back for 2022

by Ellie Werner '22

The fourth annual EcoChallenge is a perfect example of how Dickinson strives to be sustainability focused. The EcoChallenge is an engagement program that provides students, alumni, faculty and staff with the opportunity to learn and think about sustainability and put their skills to the test during a three-week competition. The online platform grants the participants access to track and share their progress online as they earn points for taking action. Participants compete among themselves and other universities by creating positive change in a fun and friendly environment. At the end of the challenge, there will be prizes for students, faculty and staff.

The EcoChallenge provides tools and inspiration to turn intention into action and gives students a fun and social way to make commitments that create a difference for not only the Dickinson community but also the planet. This year, Dickinson is competing against Haverford Sustainability, Penn State Altoona, Carlisle Area School District and Carlisle Construction Materials.

According to Lindsey Lyons, assistant director of the Center for Sustainability Education, participating in the EcoChallenge is valuable “because it focuses on behavior changes both individually and collectively. Everyone can set their own commitments but still work together with others to create measurable change.”
