Student-workers at the College Farm get to work outdoors and learn about sustainable agriculture, all while helping to better the planet, one organic crop at a time. In this Q&A, Gavin Frueh ’24 explains why he enjoyed his farm internship. He also outlines the best part of being a physics major and offers advice to new and incoming Dickinson students.
Hometown:
Bridgewater, Virginia.
Major:
Physics, with an astronomy minor.

Junkyard Turkeys Frisbee, Mob, Astronomy Club, College Farm, Dickinson College Democrats and the Outing Club.
Favorite book:
Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut.
Favorite movie:
The Martian.
Best thing about my Dickinson experience so far:
I got to work at the College Farm this past summer. I loved getting to spend my days outside and coming home at the end of every day exhausted, but my favorite part was the people. The apprentices and other student farmers made what should have been miserable experiences, like weeding tomatoes in 100-degree heat, the best memories of the summer because we were laughing so hard. I learned so much from my instructors and my peers about sustainable farming and life.
Best thing about my major so far:
When I declared a physics & astronomy major, I got a key that lets me into a few of the physics labs and the majors' room in Tome Hall so that I can run experiments or do homework on my own time. It's nice to be trusted with the space and the equipment.
Favorite place on campus:
The ping-pong table in the basement of Adams Hall.
Favorite Dining Hall food:
Sriracha Chicken Bites.
Favorite class so far:
During my first semester I took Astrophysics 208 with Associate Professor of Physics & Astronomy Windsor Morgan. The other four students in the class were juniors, but they and Dr. Morgan made me feel like an equal member of the class. I was surprised to be included in the conversations, but now that I've gotten to know Dickinson, I know to expect it.
Favorite off-campus spot:
Best thing I’ve learned so far:
In my First-year Seminar we learned how to ask good questions. I have used that lesson in every class I've taken since.
Advice to new students:
Be outside as much as you can. Separate your study spaces from your living spaces.
