As a double major in law & policy and Russian with a minor in computer science, Alyssa Martin ’22 is preparing for an international career with the federal government. An internship with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security helped her solidify her plans and better understand how the government works.
Hometown:
Lawrenceville, New Jersey

Law & policy and Russian, with a minor in computer science.

Russian Club, Dickinson Jewish Relations Council and Network of Enlightened Women.

Best thing about my major:
The best thing about my major is how wonderful the professors are. For both majors, the professors are invested in their students and want to see them succeed. I have had professors help me network and get internships. I know that if I ever need help, the professors in my majors will be there for me.
Favorite movie:
Zero Dark Thirty.
Favorite place on campus:
Morgan Field.
Favorite class/learning experience:
I've loved many classes, but the learning experience I enjoyed the most was the Mock Trial portion of my Negotiation and Advocacy course with [Adjunct Faculty in Policy Studies] Judge Edward Guido ’72. It was so much fun, and it allowed me to interact with other students. I was able to try Mock Trial and realize how much I love it.
Favorite Dining Hall food:
Chicken and parmesan rice.
On studying abroad:
I was fortunate to do a summer abroad program in Russia the summer after my first year. I primarily studied in Moscow but also spent a week studying in Saint Petersburg. The highlight of the experience was meeting my host mom. I was placed with a wonderful woman, and I kept in touch with her after leaving Russia. With her help, I was able to leave Russia speaking and understanding much more Russian than when I arrived. I also discovered a cookie that is not my favorite cookie!
As I kid, I wanted to be …
… a nun.
If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it would be …
… Audrey Hepburn.
About my internship:
I interned with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This internship appealed to me because I hope to work for the government after graduation. I learned a lot about how the government works, especially regarding the legal aspect of government work.
Post-Dickinson plans:
After I graduate from Dickinson, I plan to take a gap year and then go to law school. During that gap year, I hope to work as a legal aid at a law office so that I can gain some experience in the professional legal world.
