A Time of Transitions

We talk with departing Dickinson President Margee Ensign and incoming interim President John E. Jones III ’77, P’11, about the college’s leadership transition.

Puzzler: “The American Picker”

“Thank heavens for the collectors! It’s often their passion, their commitment, their love that enriches our lives in surprising ways,” says Associate Professor of Mathematics Jeff Forrester. “We owe a debt of gratitude to our mystery collector, though he’s much more than just that. Growing up in southeastern Pennsylvania, he found an unquenchable love for the outdoors that burned his whole life. A naturalist at heart, I’m sure you could have found him on Dickinson’s campus reading Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac, if it had been written 110 years earlier, of course. Tutored as a youth on making proper sketches by Audubon himself, he went on to make important contributions to ornithology, ichthyology and herpetology with a special focus on their proper curation. His energy and expertise eventually led to administrative appointments where he was an early proponent of conservation policies protecting coastlines and fisheries. His true love, however, remained travelling in North America and collecting natural specimens. By the time of his death, he had presided over an unprecedented expansion and transformation of the natural history collections in the U.S., a legacy we can all share today. And what visitor might we find at his final resting place as the sun rises over the sky in Georgetown? An eponymous sandpiper or sparrow perhaps, come to pay their respects.”
