Student Snapshot: Jacob DeCarli '22
Jacob DeCarli ’22 (international studies, Italian studies) is interested in journalism, learning about world cultures, languages and global politics. After just two semesters of studying Italian at Dickinson, he published English- and Italian-language articles about culture and politics through a summer internship at an Italian-American magazine. During summer 2021, he worked through Dickinson as a Presidential Fellow.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

On choosing Dickinson:
I decided to attend Dickinson because of its global education focus (I knew I wanted to study abroad when applying to colleges).
Favorite place on campus:
Anywhere in the library. Honestly, it’s an incredible place.
Favorite Dining Hall food:
Chicken parmesan.
On choosing a major:
I decided to pursue international studies because I wanted to expand my knowledge beyond domestic politics. After taking Intro to International Relations with Associate Professor of Political Science and International Studies Ed Webb, I knew that this area of study was best for me. I decided to pursue Italian studies because of my passion for the Italian language. Additionally, I plan to study in Bologna, Italy for my whole junior year, so this would be the perfect opportunity to take classes for my major.
As I kid, I wanted to be …
… a nurse practitioner, but I quickly learned, after a hospital internship, that it was not a suitable field for me.
Favorite professor:
Senior Lecturer in Italian Luca Lanzilotta. He is the most caring and passionate professor I’ve had at Dickinson. He helped spark my interest in Italian. Along the way, he’s been a great advisor.
Little-known hobby/talent:
I can hold a pretty straight handstand.
If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it would be …
… Michelle Obama.
Proudest accomplishment:
Balancing a double major with all of my activities and jobs and my social life.
About my internship:
Last summer I interned at Franklin County Human Resources and at La Gazzetta Italiana, an Italian-American magazine. Both internships provided me with valuable research skills. For La Gazzetta Italiana, I researched various topics related to Italian politics and culture, and I wrote two articles a month [in Italian and English] about my research.
The best thing about my Dickinson experience:
Being involved in numerous clubs and organizations on campus. I’ve been heavily involved since my first year and have made connections with incredible people through my activities at Dickinson.
