Brexit: Implications and Aftermath

BREXIT: Implications and Aftermath Panel

Kristine Mitchell (L), Mark Duckenfield and Oya Dursun-Ă–zkanca

What happens when Britain leaves the EU?

A panel of experts will dissect Britain’s recent decision to exit the European Union (EU) during a discussion at Dickinson titled “BREXIT: Implications and Aftermath.” It will be held Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. in the Stern Center Great Room.

In June, the people of the U.K. decided in a historic 52-to-48 percent vote to withdraw membership from the EU. The referendum’s immediate aftermath included the resignation of British Prime Minister David Cameron as well as turbulence in world financial markets. The panel will discuss the forces that drove Britain’s exit, the process by which it will formally leave the EU and the broader international implications of this decision.

The panel is composed of Mark Duckenfield, chair of the Department of National Security and Strategy at the U.S. Army War College, Oya Dursun-Özkanca, associate professor of political science and director of the international studies minor at Elizabethtown College and Kristine Mitchell, associate professor of political science and international studies at Dickinson.

Duckenfield’s scholarly interests focus on the EU, British politics and international political economy. He authored Business and the Euro: Business Groups and the Politics of Economic and Monetary Union in Britain and Germany and has served as editor for other volumes in his field of study. Dursun-Özkanca’s research interests include comparative political communication, the EU, Turkish foreign policy, south east Europe, transatlantic security and peace operations. She has edited two books, as well as numerous scholarly articles in leading peer-reviewed journals. Mitchell’s teaching and research interests focus on European and EU politics, especially the relationship between the EU and its member states and citizens. She has held visiting and short-term appointments at the Institute for European Studies at UC Berkeley, the Center for European Studies at New York University, the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris and the Department of Political Science at Northwestern University.
