Graduate School Agreement in Public Health

Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health

This agreement provides two options for Dickinson students who are receiving an undergraduate degree from Dickinson and wish to continue their studies at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health to receive a master's of public health (MPH) degree.

Qualified students enrolled in an undergraduate program at Dickinson may apply to Columbia’s 4+1 or 4+2 MPH program during their junior year of undergraduate studies. Accepted students will be required to successfully complete their undergraduate program at Dickinson and fulfill all degree requirements at Columbia’s New York campus for the MPH degree in which they are enrolled.

Option 1 (4+1)

The 4+1 one-year MPH program provides Dickinson students the opportunity to take classes at Mailman during the fall semester of their senior year at Dickinson and then to complete their education through one additional year of study at Columbia, culminating in the conferral of a MPH degree upon completion of all degree requirements. The conferral of the MPH degree requires successful completion of the undergraduate degree at Dickinson.

Option 2 (4+2)

The 4+2 two-year MPH program provides Dickinson students the opportunity to participate in public health research during the summer between junior and senior year at Columbia, and they are eligible to attend research seminars or activities at Columbia during their senior year at Dickinson. Students will begin the two-year master’s in public health at Columbia following graduation from Dickinson. Additionally, qualified Dickinson graduates are eligible for priority admission to the Columbia MPH program.

Qualifications

Students applying to Columbia under either option must meet Columbia’s routine MPH program qualifications and submit the proper material:

  • A minimum GPA of 3.5
  • A 500-word personal statement stating interest in the program
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Proficiency in English, as demonstrated by 100 on the IBT TOEFL or 7.0 on the IELTS (for international students)

The GRE requirement will be waived. The Dickinson program liaison will review all applications from Dickinson students and then forward to Columbia the names of those who are recommended by Dickinson along with a letter of support. Application materials should be submitted by November 1 to Laura Kilko (717-245-1740, kilkol@dickinson.edu) associate director and pre-law advisor for Dickinson's Advising, Internships & Career Center
