October 10, 2021

In the Heights PG-13 ● 143 Min. ● In Spanish & English

Lights up on Washington Heights...The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi, who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life. Directed by Jon Chu, In the Heights is based on Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway musical, and stars the charismatic Anthony Ramos as Usnavi, Rita Moreno, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Corey Hawkins, Jimmy Smits, Leslie Grace, and Melissa Barrera.

Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that "Art is either alive or dead, and this movie is emphatically and exuberantly living, energized by what can only truly be described as love." A .O Scott affirms, in the New York Times, that In the Heights is "a piece of mainstream American entertainment in the best sense — an assertion of impatience and faith, a celebration of communal ties and individual gumption, a testimony to the power of art to turn struggles into the stuff of dreams."

This film is part of Hollywood on High series sponsored by Dickinson College.
