Listening to Lisbon’s Fado

December 1, 2021

In honor of Portugal’s Restoration of Independence Day, we’re offering this webinar to learn about fado, Portugal’s most celebrated genre of popular music.

Fado can be heard in Lisbon’s professional fado houses, concert halls, tourist sites and amateur bars (tascas). A fado singer might sing a song of heartbreak until her “voice hurts,” and the Portuguese guitarist accompanying her might vibrate a note, making it “weep.” Fado aficionados in Lisbon use the term “fadista” not only to refer to one who sings fado, but also to one who knows how to listen to fado. This talk will introduce key musical, cultural and historical aspects of fado. By the end of the webinar, participants will understand how to be a good fado listener of live and recorded performances. The Zoom link will be sent to registrants on the day of the event. Please register Monday, Nov. 29.
