A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin, By Jen Bryant, 2013.

Born in Pennsylvania, celebrated artist Horace Pippin is known for his paintings depicting the everyday lives of African Americans, his experiences serving in World War I and stories from the Bible. When he was a boy, Pippin loved to draw. He saw an ad for a drawing contest, entered and won first prize--a set of artist's supplies. Even though Horace never took art classes, he taught himself to paint prize-winning pictures. He said that he painted the world exactly as he saw it. If you look closely at Pippin’s pictures, you’ll always find a bit of red somewhere. Pippin believed that everything needs a splash of red!

In honor of Horace Pippin, we invite you to create a drawing or painting with a splash of red. You can paint whatever you like; just be sure it represents things as you see them and has red color somewhere in the picture. The first 25 people to submit a work of art will win a set of artist’s supplies, just like Pippin. Prizes will be distributed during this special Family Night, November 18, featuring food and drink, art activities and tours of the exhibition Horace Pippin: Racism and War.
