An introduction and discussion of contemporary practices and concerns in the environmental justice field that emphasizes how COVID-19 exacerbates existing environmental injustices.
Environmental justice aspires for all people- regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, or socioeconomic background - to have equal access to a healthy environment, including avenues to participate meaningfully in decisions regarding their environment. Environmental injustice examines which communities and places are disproportionately exposed to environmental health risks from industrial, municipal, commercial operations, or government policies. The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic and associated impacts are not experienced equally, as people in environmental injustice areas with high levels of air pollution are at heightened risk for health challenges. This panel will explore these intersections and will highlight an innovative effort in Harrisburg to provide pandemic related workforce training for area youth.
