Giving someone the ability to dream

There’s no greater gift than the ability to dream. For Pablo Thaler ’07 (international studies, international business & management), a Dickinson scholarship made the very act of dreaming big possible—and it’s a gift that keeps on giving.
Thaler, a native of Buenos Aires, applied to Dickinson in the midst of severe economic collapse and political unrest in Argentina. “We had five presidents in one week, and our currency devaluated by a hundred percent in the same period,” he remembers. “This had a huge impact not just on me but on an entire generation. We felt like our futures had been stripped away from us.”
That changed when Thaler became the first recipient of Dickinson’s Global Campus Scholarship, established through a gift by Yale Asbell ’78. After graduating magna cum laude and earning an M.S. in international studies from Johns Hopkins University, Thaler joined the Organization of American States as a political analyst. Working with multilateral organizations and small governments, he helps build more stable democracies and markets in Central and South America.
“It’s really hard to imagine what my life would have been like [without a Dickinson scholarship],” Thaler says, adding that, for himself, and for the Global Campus Scholars who have followed him, the opportunities his education have brought him are “beyond our wildest dreams.”
“Thank you for that—not just for us,” Thaler says to those who contribute to scholarships, “but for our children, and our children’s children, who will forever be grateful.”
