How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

Dickinson has prepared me for my future by holding me to very high standards in academia. I was challenged every single day to succeed in my classes, and I think this foundation of hard work and responsibility will be important as I move on to graduate school. Dickinson has made me a more well-rounded person in challenging me to be able to balance academics, work and my social life, and this is also important as I graduate as well.

Internship Experience

  • Lifestyles for the Disabled in New York, a nonprofit organization for adults with developmental disabilities.
  • Externship at the Big Brothers Big Sisters office in Philadelphia, learned the ins and outs of the program, and helped run a few match meetings between kids in local schools and their Bigs.

What are you most anticipating about your future?

I am excited to start a new chapter of my life at Brooklyn College to pursue my career goal of becoming a school psychologist.

How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

Dickinson has prepared me to be open-minded and willing to accept new ideas in all aspects of my life. I am able to encounter all obstacles with confidence and a strong passion to do so. I have been prepared to give all of my efforts towards responsibilities and take advantage of all opportunities that are provided. Dickinson has provided me with an education and an attitude that will allow me to succeed throughout the rest of my life.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I anticipate that whichever career path I choose, I will be well prepared. Considering the job offers I have received, my Dickinson education will enable me to carefully choose where I will fit and succeed the most. I have learned how to compromise as well as negotiate to find which career will suit me the best and where I will flourish.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Defining moments include recognizing the educational and athletic opportunities that Dickinson has provided for me. Looking back, my experiences here and the opportunities I have been provided could not have happened anywhere else. The Dickinson experience is truly a unique one. Relationships that I have developed were able to progress greatly within the close-knit community Dickinson encourages.

Alicia Bazell

Major: psychology, music
Hometown: Columbia, Maryland
Graduate School: University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University
Field of Study: social work and public health

Program Description

I will be in a dual master's program for a clinical M.S.W and an M.P.H. in Baltimore. I am interested in becoming a licensed clinical social worker to practically apply practices of mental health treatment to patients while also being involved in a nonprofit in order to participate in mental-health advocacy work for underserved groups (like LGBTQ adults and youths).

How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

Dickinson has taught me a lot in terms of concrete knowledge from my courses, but also being here has taught me so much about how to conduct myself as an adult and how to use the connections I have to further my interests. Through the opportunities I have had in the psychology department to work with faculty as a teaching assistant and student worker, as well as the individual attention I have received from the music department in terms of private lessons and personal investment of professors, I have grown as a person and feel more confident going into the real world outside of Dickinson.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

One of the most defining moments of my experience here was winning the college concerto competition. It has allowed me to pursue my musical passion, and I will be able to perform my concerto with the College Orchestra, which is unlike any opportunity I would have at another school. Even though I do not want to pursue music professionally after graduation, the department and professors have been extremely supportive and helpful in allowing me to pursue it as much as I want here at Dickinson. Another defining moment of my experience at Dickinson was being able to be a teaching assistant for a psychology research methods course for two semesters. It allowed me to connect with the faculty members on a more personal level, help other students feed their passion for psychology and practice teaching about a subject in which I am interested.

How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

Dickinson has allowed me to make connections between my major and other fields of study, which will allow me to enter graduate school with a more holistic understanding of psychology. I have been able to work with and learn from professors whose area of expertise addresses clients I wish to work with in my professional career. I hope to continue these relationships so I can continue learning and growing from the faculty I have met here.

Internship Experience

Since fall 2017, I have been working as a mental-health technician at Roxbury Treatment Center in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. I provide counseling in the adult and adolescent psychiatric units, perform 15-minute observations of patients and maintain the therapeutic milieu of the unit.

What are you most anticipating about your future?

I'm excited to pursue my masters so that I can become an LCSW and reach my goal of being a therapist, ideally treating a population of patients with eating disorders. I've worked my entire undergraduate career toward understanding clinical populations from a therapeutic standpoint, and I'm excited to bring my Dickinson education with me into graduate school at Rutgers and into my clinical work.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

A defining moment for me was taking Professor [Michelle] Ford's psychopathology course my first semester here. It really solidified that psychology was something I was passionate about and that treating clinical populations was my ultimate career goal. Each psychology class I took here and each professor I met with continued to prove to me that I was following the right path for myself.
