Inspired to Engage

Students highlight some of the many service opportunities in this Snapchat takeover video from CommServ Fair.

Students explore the ways to get involved at Dickinson with Activities Fair and Community Service Fair

Whether it's the Astronomy Club, the Quidditch team or the climbing team, it's likely that every Dickinson students can find something of interest at the spring Activities Fair!

This semester, more than 100 co-curricular and extracurricular clubs and organizations showcased what they do, why it's important and how students can get involved. By offering a wide variety of clubs and organizations—from politics to environmental activism, sports and service—students have more opportunities to become engaged, active members of the Dickinson community. This spring, there were about 800 students in attendance.

"The spring Activities Fair is a great way for students, particularly first-years, to explore how they can make Dickinson theirs through campus engagement," says Jessee Vasold, program coordinator for the Office of Student Leadership & Campus Engagement.

Another way that students get involved is through CommServ, which is a network of 16 programs that reach into the local community to meet a variety of needs on a regular basis. In the 2016-17 academic year, over 150 students volunteered with local organizations such as America Reads, Habitat for Humanity, ArtWorks! and the Salvation Army Youth Program.

Students can learn about these great service opportunities through the CommServ Fair, but it only scratches the surface of volunteer opportunities that students can find through the Center for Service, Spirituality & Social Justice.

"We really believe that service is important, right from the get-go," says Donna Hughes, director of the Center for Service, Spirituality & Social Justice, which hosts and sponsors the CommServ fair each year. "One of the first things we do during orientation is a first-year service day, and they go out to 40 agencies in Carlisle and the surrounding areas and do service. In that way, they understand the community that they're part of."
