Charter Day celebrates Dickinson's history, philanthropy

Dickinsonians gathered to celebrate the signing of the college's charter and Dickinson's rich history of philanthropy on Wednesday, Sept. 9, during the annual Charter Day picnic. In addition to burgers, hot dogs, other barbecue favorites, vegetarian fare and ice cream from David Yuengling ’84’s Yuengling Ice Cream, the event highlighted the important role donors have played in Dickinson's history.

"Dickinson's theme today is philanthropy, past, present and future," said Nick Rejebian ’17, one of many students in attendance. "What that means to us is giving back to the college because we know that being a Dickinsonian doesn't end after four years. It continues on."

President Nancy Roseman, Al Masland ’79, chair of the Alumni Council's Alumni & Student Engagement Committee, and Emily Gamber ’17, president of the Devils' Advocates Student Philanthropy Council, spoke on the role alumni and students play in helping to advance the college. This year, students also took part in the Charter Day Challenge, an app-based photo and trivia hunt highlighting the history of giving at the college.

"When I learned what the Dickinson Fund goes to, I was immediately hooked, because I'm here at Dickinson on a scholarship, and I wouldn't be here without it," said Katie Lasswell ’17. "Philanthropy is a great tradition to start, because if you love this campus or anything about it, you can donate to that and continue to do that for the rest of your life."
