This is the major for students who want a solid grounding in business and economics while exploring international cultural, political and business environments. The core of the program is a series of business, economics and foreign-language courses with an international orientation. Students typically select a single international region for additional coursework. Students are encouraged to take advantage of academic year, semester and summer international immersion programs. These programs often include internship opportunities that connect majors with the world of international business.
Welcome Message - Department of International Business and Management
The International Business and Management major was established in 1997 and has now produced ten classes of graduates. These graduates are successfully working in a variety of careers including: general management, project management, Wall Street analysts, marketing, accounting, consulting, the law, government, entrepreneurs, and non-profit management.
The International Business and Management major is not a conventional business major but one that is built on Dickinson’s strengths: a liberal education, foreign language acquisition, global perspective, collaborative learning, and interdisciplinary approaches. Our intent is to nurture a new generation of civic and business leaders who can inspire others to generate creative, integrative, and ethical solutions to many challenging issues of the 21st century. We strongly believe that in this age of globalization, increasing complexity, perpetual innovation, and constant change in nearly every aspect of business, the most important qualities of successful leaders are not simply professional knowledge, but a unique combination of adaptability, flexibility, creativity, and lifelong learning. Business people today need foreign-language proficiency, cross-cultural literacy, and global perspective in order to meet the challenges of globalization; they have to develop basic competencies of quantitative analysis for understanding the financial consequences of their decisions; they have to develop excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, teamwork skills, and leadership skills in order to lead and motivate employees, secure strategic alliances, and collaborate with strategic partners; and develop and integrate systems, strategic, creative, and critical thinking so that they can initiate sustainable strategies, generate integrative solutions, and develop new business ventures that maintain competitive advantages for their corporations. Of course, this new type of business leader must realize that the consequences of their decisions are going to impact far more than simply their firm, but also families, communities and society at large. Because of small class sizes, close faculty-student interactions, and an emphasis on collaborative leaning, Dickinson is an excellent place to nurture the skill sets mentioned above. Our students may also take advantage of Dickinson’s study aboard programs to further nurture business competencies and cultural knowledge and sensitivities.
It is our strong belief that that the best place to nurture the next generation of both civic and business leaders is not in a conventional business program, but in a program like ours based on a liberal education and focused on the development of global perspective that a globally focused, liberal arts college like Dickinson can offer. The faculty of International Business and Management are committed to collaboration with our students to make their study at Dickinson a fruitful experience that will become the foundation of lifelong learning and lifetime success.
