Don Nichter, the longtime head coach of the men's and women's cross country programs and former leader of the track and field teams, has announced he will retire at the conclusion of the 2026 cross country season, marking the end of one of the most storied coaching tenures in Centennial Conference history.
Nichter joined the college in the mid-1980s, building the men's and women's cross country programs into consistent contenders at the national level. Over the course of his tenure, his teams claimed 24 Centennial Conference championships across cross country and track and field. Among the most notable stretches was the 2009-10 academic year, when the men's programs swept conference titles in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track—an achievement that remains singular in program history.
Beyond the competitive record, Nichter was known for an approach that placed equal weight on academic achievement and athletic development. His programs were regular honorees on the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team lists, a reflection of his long-held conviction that rigorous academics and high-level athletics are complementary, not competing, pursuits. Over the years, he mentored hundreds of student-athletes under a guiding philosophy he often expressed simply: "The journey is the reward."
Dickinson will celebrate Nichter's many accomplishments over the next several months as he concludes his tenure at the end of the 2026 cross country season. A fuller account of his career and legacy will appear in an upcoming issue of Dickinson Magazine.
