Junior caps off standout season with national 800-meter crown, All-American honors

Trevor Richwine ’26 (environmental studies) surged into the national spotlight this spring, winning the 800-meter title at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships and earning First Team All-American honors in the process.

The Newville, Pennsylvania, native clinched the championship with a winning time of 1:49.99—after qualifying for the final with the second-fastest preliminary time of 1:51.14—sealing his spot among the top nine competitors out of a 22-athlete field.

“It feels pretty good, that's for sure,” says Richwine. “I worked so hard all year, and I’m just happy that it paid off.”

The title capped an exceptional 2025 season for Richwine, who was named by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as Mid-Atlantic Male Track Athlete of the Year (Assistant Head Coach Don Nichter was named Mid-Atlantic Men's Assistant Coach of the Year). Earlier in the season, Richwine clocked a blistering 1:48.31 in the 800-meter—making him the No. 9 performer in NCAA Division III history. He also dominated the Centennial Conference Championships, setting a meet record of 1:51.01 in the 800-meter and contributing to a first-place finish in the 4×800-meter relay and a runner-up result in the 4×400-meter relay.

“Because this was my fifth appearance in a row at the national level, I knew this race would be extremely tight and quick,” Richwine says. “I expected that I would be in the mix of things, considering I was in great fitness and because I had so much experience under my belt.”

Looking ahead, Richwine remains focused and driven.

“My goal next year is to continue improving on my 800-meter time and to fight for another national championship,” he says. “While I’m satisfied with how my season ended this year, I know I can put even more work in this offseason to better myself. And I’m excited to see our program grow. We had a lot of people step up this year, gaining us recognition among the conference, so I look forward to seeing what we all can accomplish next year.”
