Associate Professor of Environmental Studies Heather Bedi appeared as a guest on the Nordic Asia Podcast to discuss the book she co-authored, The Great Goa Land Grab.
The Houston Chronicle talked with Professor of History and Boyd Lee Spahr Chair in the History of the Americas Marcelo Borges about the history of company towns in an article about Elon Musk’s plans to create a company town in Texas.
Associate Professor of Spanish Eva Copeland published “On Blackness and Belonging in Contemporary Spain: Desirée Bela-Lobedde’s Ser mujer negra en España” in the December 2022 issue of Hispania, which is published by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). The article received the 2023 AATSP Outstanding Scholarly Publication Award. Copeland was also part of a roundtable conversation in April titled “Modern Spain and the Early Travels of Arturo Schomburg” at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture (New York Public Library). The program was in conjunction with the just-opened groundbreaking exhibition of the early modern Afro-Hispanic painter Juan de Pareja at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The recording is available at the Schomburg Center’s YouTube page. The exhibition itself has been covered by major news organizations, including CNN and CBS.
Assistant Professor of Economics Xiaozhou Ding was featured in a RentCafe article, “Expert Analysis: What Makes Millionaires Want to Rent and Not Buy?”
Professor of American Studies and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies and James Hope Caldwell Memorial Chair Amy Farrell was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities grant for research for a book chronicling the history of the Girl Scouts of the USA and its issues with race and feminism. She was quoted on the Burnt Toast Podcast about the childhood obesity epidemic.
Professor of Mathematics and Data Analytics Dick Forrester wrote three chapters for the Encyclopedia of Optimization. Published by Springer, it is a comprehensive reference work in the field of operations research. The chapters are “Linearization Strategies for Binary Quadratic and Higher-Order Polynomial Programs,” “Modeling Using Logical Constraints” and “Crop Rotation Modeling.” The first two chapters were co-authored with Lucas Waddell from Bucknell University.
Professor of Economics Ebru Kongar was quoted in the story “Some Pa. Lawmakers Want to Incentivize a Four-Day Workweek,” which appeared on WENY-TV (Elmira, N.Y.) and WICU-TV (Erie, Pa.).
Professor of Computer Science John MacCormick published “I Unintentionally Created a Biased AI Algorithm 25 Years Ago—Tech Companies Are Still Making the Same Mistake” in The Conversation. More than 50 additional media outlets have republished his piece. Read more.
Visiting Professor of International Security Studies Jeff McCausland continues to be a frequent expert commentator on CBS Eye on the World/The John Batchelor Show on CBS Radio stations across the country. McCausland also discussed the war in Ukraine with KCBS-AM in San Francisco and WRUU-FM in Savannah, Ga., and at a special event with the Savannah Council on World Affairs. He recently appeared as a guest on “Transatlantic Currents,” a webinar series hosted by the Finnish Institute of International Affairs.
Associate Professor of Political Science Sarah Niebler contributed to a WHTM-TV ABC27 story, “Candidates Can Cross-file in Pennsylvania Primaries,” and a Pennsylvania Capital-Star article, “Pennsylvania Midterm Results Highlight Trend Toward Fewer Split Tickets.”
Associate Professor of French & Francophone and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Mireille Rebeiz took part in the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg’s 2023 International Women’s Conference, which was covered by PennLive/The Patriot-News. She published “Remembering the Armenian Genocide From Lebanon” in The Markaz Review. After her efforts led successive Pennsylvania governors, Tom Wolf and Josh Shapiro, to declare April as Arab American Heritage Month, Rebeiz and her son, Jameson, met the governor and Sen. Art Haywood on the Senate floor, and Shapiro signed the declaration in her presence. Soon after, Rebeiz was invited to the White House to celebrate Arab American Heritage Month. Read more.
Professor of Mathematics and John J. & Ann Curley Chair in Liberal Arts Dave Richeson published “The Colorful Problem That Has Long Frustrated Mathematicians” in Quanta magazine.
Administrator Accolades
Inside Higher Ed carried news of Renée Ann Cramer’s appointment as Dickinson’s provost and dean of the college.
Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Maggie Douglas and College Farm Director Jenn Halpin appear in an article in the June/July 2023 issue of Growing for Market magazine. They discussed working toward standardized measurements of farm biodiversity.
President John E. Jones III ’77, P’11 provided expert legal analysis and commentary in a variety of stories this spring by outlets including WHYY-FM Philadelphia, WITF-FM Harrisburg, WGAL-TV’s talk program In Focus, WHTM-TV ABC27, WPMT-TV FOX43, the National Law Journal and CNN. He was part of a panel discussion by members of Keep Our Republic, which was featured by PennLive/The Patriot-News, City & State PA and several other outlets.
Academic Director of the Durden Dickinson Program in Bremen Janine Ludwig appeared in the May issue of Dein Spiegel, a publication of the prominent German news outlet Der Spiegel (The Mirror). She was interviewed about what has changed since the Cold War. Ludwig grew up in the GDR (East Germany); when the wall fell, she was 15 years old. Today she researches German history at the University of Bremen.
Director of Sustainability Learning Lindsey Lyons was quoted in a U.S. News & World Report article, “Sustainable Travel: 6 Ways to Be an Eco-Conscious Traveler.”
The Cool Down featured the College Farm’s anaerobic digester project and quoted Special Projects Manager Matt Steiman.
