Student Snapshot: Emilio Gurany '25

Emilio Gurany '25 is a double major in music and history.

As a double major in history and music, Emilio Gurany ’25 is able to dive deep into two subjects he’s passionate about. He’s also developing teaching and leadership skills as a Writing Center tutor, teaching assistant and resident advisor (RA), all while playing in the Dickinson jazz band. Below, he discusses the opportunity for personal connections with professors that drew him to Dickinson, his advice for younger students and more.

Hometown:

Dover, Pennsylvania.

Majors:

History and music.

Clubs/organizations:

Writing Center (tutor), music department teaching assistant, Dickinson Jazz Band and Resident Advisor.

Favorite book:

World War Z by Max Brooks.

Best thing about my majors:

Being able to engage with my passions on a deeper level. I've always loved both history and music. Being able to take a deep dive into both subjects has been a great experience.

On choosing Dickinson:

I wanted a school that was smaller in size so that I could feel more comfortable within the community. I wanted to actually be able to know my professors and have them know me, and I definitely feel that that is the case here at Dickinson.

Favorite off-campus spot:

North Hanover Grill.

As a kid, I wanted to be …

… a paleontologist.

Post-graduation plans:

Attend law school.

Most important thing I’ve learned so far:

Time management. With so much going on at once, you need to learn how to manage your time and how to prioritize certain things.

Advice for younger students:

Enjoy yourself. Take your schoolwork as seriously as you have to in order to succeed, but don't stress beyond that. Part of being successful is knowing when to step back and have fun.
